Winter Walk and Talk
By Alma Hecht
The inaugural meeting
of APLD's San Francisco District braved the cold for a Winter Walk at the San
Francisco Botanical Garden at
Strybing
Arboretum on January 17th,
2007.
Michele Schaal, a long-time docent, led our expedition.
Bundled up, we had a
fine time discussing design, plants, planting techniques, and the merits of hot
chocolate.

Sponsorship Program Off to a Strong
Start
By Kelly Greenwood
The annual
sponsorship drive is off to a strong start, with volunteers from every district
pitching in to call businesses and talk to them about the program. These
volunteers' have raised over $12,500 so far, but there's still a ways to go to
achieve this year's goal of $25,000.
The funds will be
used to finance the complete website upgrade and redesign that will launch in
February as well as ongoing district events. We could always use more help with
making calls or contacts--if you're interested in volunteering, please call Kelly
at 650-996-4612 or email kelly@greenwoodlandscape.com.
Exciting Location for APLD Booth at
San
Francisco Flower & Garden Show
By Deanna Glory
This year the APLD
booth is located smack dab in the middle of the Plant Market right next to the
'Hot Plant Picks' area! The APLD 'booth'
itself will simulate either a designer's studio, or a small garden patio -
either setting will consist of inviting and comfortable seating for consumers
and prospective members to sit and chat with us! We're sure to get lots of traffic this year,
and we want the booth to look especially professional, so we're updating our
portfolios which illustrate our members beautiful garden designs. See below for more info on how to get your
work included.
In the meantime,
we also need great folks like you to work a shift or two in the booth - and the
good shifts are going fast. Staffing
the booth is not only a wonderful opportunity to reach out to new APLD members,
but also to inform the public about the professional standards of our designers. Below is a list of what shifts are still
available (as of February 1), so let me know as soon as possible which shift(s)
you would like. And don't forget, you'll
have free access to the show and seminars before and after your shift.
Wednesday, March 21
3pm to 6pm
6pm to 8pm
Thursday, March 22
9am to 12 noon
3pm to 6pm
Friday March 23
12 noon to 3pm
Saturday, March 24
9am to 12 noon
12 noon to 3pm
3pm to 6pm
6pm to 8pm
Sunday, March 25
9am to 12 noon
12 noon to 3pm
3pm to 6pm
6pm to 8pm
Since we need two
people per shift you can volunteer with a friend, or volunteer on your own and
get to know another APLD member on your shift.
It's a great opportunity to discuss the ins and outs of the business. For those of you coming from
Sacramento and the North Bay, you might form a carpool of four people,
and sign up for two shifts back to back.
That way two of you can work the booth while the other two are seeing
the show - food for thought.
We also still need
help setting up and tearing down the booth - if you volunteer to help with
these tasks you'll have the opportunity to be escorted around the main garden
show arena to see how the show gardens are being built - or torn down as the
case may be. Even if you've seen this
amazing feat before, it's always fun to watch again and again! Sign up for one, or more of these
shifts:
- Booth installation on Monday, March 19
and Tuesday, March 20 - hours to be determined
- Booth tear down on Sunday, March 25
after the show closes at 6 PM
Email deanna@glorydesign.com for more info
and to RSVP.

Grand Opportunity
for CLCA and APLD Collaboration
By Kevin Burns
In a continuing
effort to foster collaboration between professional landscape designers and
contractors, CLCA San Francisco Bay Area Chapter cordially invites your
participation in collaborating on the design and construction of the CLCA
Garden Exhibition at the 2007 San Francisco Flower & Garden Show.
We have a
very short time to develop and implement a design for our ten feet by twenty
feet space, just outside Petal Plaza. We have some ideas for using materials
already available and are looking for a few highly imaginative and creative
minds to help create a beautiful garden worthy of this year's garden theme:
Living & Loving the Garden Life.
We hope to find
one, or more designers, willing to collaborate on the design. The garden should
be able to be built and planted in no more than two days, so we will want to
keep it simple yet provide an exuberant display of plants, to attract California's home owners. We will provide a terrific
endorsement of APLD as well as directions to the APLD Display Garden at
the show. Please contact Kevin Burns at
650-343-0011 or kevin@maximumservicelandscaping.com
for more information.
See you at the
show!
