Make A Difference Week

Josh McKenzie

The annual “Make a Difference Week” is rapidly approaching, taking place April 14th- 21st. The week of events has been prepared by a collaboration of people including Student Government, Student Programming, among many more. A week kicks off where Greek week ends, with the 2nd Annual Greek Row Yard Sale on April 14th. Some of the highlights that students will take notice are the showing of “An Inconvenient Truth,” the SGA’s “I Hate…” campaign on the KUC Knoll, a visit from Sheryl Crow, an Earth Day Festival on Friday with an array of bands, and Kappa Delta’s hugely successful Wing Fling on the Old Alumni Center Lawn. Greek of the Week:

Patrick Allen

John Carter

Each week, the newsletter honors an outstanding member of the Greek community for their extraordinary contributions and service.  Very few people, however, have shown dedication and commitment as noteworthy as current Greek of the Week Patrick Allen.  Patrick, a brother of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, has taken the duty of raising money for “Push America,” their national philanthropy that improves the lives of people with disabilities, into his own hands, onto his own feet, and to a whole new level.

This summer, Patrick is going to participate in an 800 mile bicycle trek through the state of Florida as part of “Gear Up Florida,” an annual event that is considered Push America’s best two weeks of programming.  The journey begins in Miami, makes stops in 13 cities over 14 days, including Tampa, Orlando, and Jacksonville, and finishes in the capitol, Tallahassee.  Each host city puts on a “friendship visit” between the riders and the people they are raising money to assist.  These visits consist of a variety of activities, ranging from bowling to dinners to attending baseball games.

Push America set a goal for each rider to raise $2,000.  Patrick felt like he could do more and set a personal goal of $3,000.  He has surpassed that mark, and with nearly two weeks until money has to be submitted (April 12th), he has no intentions of slowing down.

He is on campus training and taking donations in front of the KUC almost every day, for people interested in advancing his remarkable effort.

The Men of MTSU…Making Wishes Come True

Bree Kirby

The 38th Annual Mr. MTSU Pageant is returning April 11th, at 7 pm in Tucker Theater.  Hosted by the sisters of Chi Omega, this year’s pageant will feature fourteen contestants from all aspects of campus.  In addition to the opening routine, the men will compete in swimsuit, talent, formal wear, and interview competitions.  These men are ready to show all of their hard work off as they entertain the audience.

As always, all money raised from the Mr. MTSU pageant will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes for terminally ill children. Last year, Chi Omega raised over $6,000 for Make-A-Wish.  This year, with GLPB graciously allowing the pageant to be held during Greek Week, Chi Omega is confident that number will be even higher.  The extra money raised from the attendance of the entire Greek community will greatly benefit Make-A-Wish.

A very special guest at Mr. MTSU will be a seven-year-old girl who will have her wish granted by the money raised from the pageant.  The sisters of Chi Omega will have the opportunity to be with her every step of the way in her wish-making process.  As always, the Mr. MTSU pageant will prove to be fun and entertaining, with the proceeds going towards a great cause.  Come out and support the contestants as they dazzle you with their charm and talent.  Tickets are available now!  You can buy a ticket from any Chi Omega for $6 in advance, or $8 at the door.

Also this week is Chi Omega's Wish Week, April 4th-11th, with Mr. MTSU acting as the closing ceremonies. Events include:

 Wash for Wishes

A carwash held at the Dairy Queen closest to Greek Row on Thursday, April 5th. Donations only from 4-7pm.

Captives for Chi O

Get a Chi Omega to arrest a fellow Greek for $3. The jail will be placed on the KUC Knoll from 10-2 on Tuesday, April 10th.

The South Eastern Panhellenic Conference

Whitney Carr

The National Panhellenic Council of MTSU attended SEPC this past weekend in Atlanta. The Southeastern Panhellenic Conference, held annually, is an opportunity for all Panhellenic Councils at schools across the Southeast to come together with pride. Attendees stay at a hotel together and are part of educational workshops and group sessions. Nationally renowned speakers come to get the ladies fired up and to also show them a good time. One speaker happened to be the “Evolution of Dance Guy” from YouTube, Judson Laipply.

SEPC is also a chance to meet sisters across the region since all 26 NPC sororities are represented. The women of MTSU were honored with receiving the award of “Excellence in Programming for Women’s Issues,” with only twenty of the 173 participating councils receiving any of the distinguished awards. Seventeen Panhellenic women from MTSU enjoyed a great time learning how to better not only Panhellenic but their own organization as well.

“I was able to connect with my own sorority, but got the idea that there are so many other organizations at other schools. It made me realize that we are all one Panhellenic; we are all different, but all the same,” says Alpha Chi Omega Whitney Haldeman.
