Ice Cream for Your Face and Leather Bags You'll Love

The Three Tomatoes just returned from Tuscany, one of the most glorious places on earth (more about that in a future newsletter).   Our long airline flight got us to musing about the days when air travel was actually fun, exciting, and even glamorous.   In fact it wasn’t that long ago , in tomato time  (which is sort of like dog years, except in reverse, so you keep getting younger) that 747 airplanes had first class lounges in the top bubble and if you were flying coast to coast,  it was basically a five-hour cocktail party! (Can anyone say “mile high club”?) And then you’d show up at the car rental counter in LA, slightly buzzed, and head for the freeway in your rented car.   These days of course, air travel ranks about head to head with a Greyhound bus. Okay, okay, we’ve never actually been on a Greyhound bus, but from what we hear, it might actually be better -- more leg room for one thing.   Even when you’re lucky enough to get upgraded to business or first class where maybe you’ll get something to eat, you still get plastic utensils.  (Ever try cutting the not so tender beef fillet with a plastic knife?)  And you might get those warm chocolate chip cookies and the secret little thrill of knowing the scent is driving everyone in coach with NO food crazy.  And the once glamorous flight attendants?   Well, they’re still there…the very same ones, now bona fide tomatoes.  Along with the younger, really good looking flight attendants who are mostly gay guys.  Which is a long way of telling you about a great moisturizer we discovered in-flight -- Kenzoki Vital-Ice Cream.

We were perusing the duty free catalog (yes, The Three Tomatoes can and do shop anywhere) when this moisturizer ad caught our eye.  So when the flight attendants came by, we inquired of the female flight attendant about the moisturizer and before she could answer the male flight attendant told us that he uses it all the time, as do most of the flight attendants on international runs (all that recycled airline air really dries out the skin).   We were sold!   Now here’s the really neat thing – they recommend you keep it refrigerated and you can’t image how great this luscious, rich ginger scented cream feels on your face in the morning and the evening -- just like ice cream.   You can buy it online at Sephora.com for $58.  Or better yet, book an international flight and buy it duty free for $44, and if you’re really lucky like we were, it will be on sale for $40.   You see, The Three Tomatoes can find bargains even at 30,000 feet.

Great leather bags right here in NYC…. Italy of course, has the most luxurious leather handbags under the Tuscan sun or any other sun.  So here we were, walking down 40th street in NYC this week, still in our Tuscan glow when we spotted this tiny little shop with a window full of brightly colored handbags.  A flashback we thought?  But no, this delightful shop, S.D. Kitson New York opened this summer.  Designed by David Kitson and made in Italy, Argentina, and India, the bags are lightweight leather, but capable of holding tons of stuff.  A beautiful large leather tote will hold up to 100 pounds (hey even we don’t carry around that much stuff, but it’s good to know).  We hesitated to look at the prices and were amazed and delighted -- the small bags start at $25 and top out around $150.00.   They also carry some very fun and funky jewelry from around the world -- bangle bracelets and chandelier earrings.  This is a great place to start your holiday shopping (you know, the one for me, one for whomever else kind of shopping.)   You’ll find S.D. Kitson at 30 E. 40th Street between Madison and Park.   Ask for Sandy, the delightful co-manager and tell him The Three Tomatoes sent you.

Arrivederci!

You know you’re a tomato if…you remember when retailers actually let you enjoy Halloween and Thanksgiving before they started bombarding you with Deck the Halls and ‘tis the Season.   At the rate some retailers are going, we’ll be singing Santa Claus is Coming to Town in July!
