HEAD NOTES
From Head of School, Lou Salza
Soon the Winter Solstice will mark the sun's greatest declination south of
the equator and, in the Northern Hemisphere, the shortest and darkest day of the year.
In Ancient Rome, my ancestors called this day "Dies Invicti Solis" or "The
day of the invincible sun." I am buoyed by the ancients' faith that in the deepest darkest moments of the year, an inevitable turning towards
the light begins and the seasons begin their cycle of renewal once again. Now, here in my first winter in over a decade, I will look forward to
lengthening days, and the coming of the new year with its promise of spring.
As we approach this years Solstice, let us be mindful that there are many
standing watch on our behalf around a dangerous globe, and there are many right here at home who need someone standing with and for them. I am
grateful for my life, and for our shared work on behalf of the children at Lawrence School and students wherever they go to school.
As a new grandfather, an educator for thirty years and a new Head of School
at Lawrence, I reflect on the wisdom in Charlie King's folk song written three decades ago. He sang, "Our lives are more than our work; and our work
is more than our jobs...."
So this holiday - whether you light the Menorah and celebrate the Festival of
Lights, look to the east for the Christmas Star, or simply scan the heavens in awe and wonder as the Ancients did - let us seek the light deep in our
hearts, and in the hearts of all those we touch.
I wish us all peace this Holiday Season, and in the New Year.
Lou
