GREETINGS
My son Brad injured his leg and caught a bad cold a week before the District cross country meet. His place in the District race would greatly determine his team's chance of making it to State. Before the race I asked him how he was handling the frustration and pressure of not being in top form. He said, "If I go out and do my best, then I'll know it was not my fault if we don't make it to State." Sometimes doing our best means giving 100% of what we can offer at the time, which is not always the same as our best. Brad ran 15 seconds slower than his fastest time of the year...and helped his team make it to State! As you work through your many student leadership responsibilities, remember to allow yourself the grace of giving your best effort even if the results will be less than your best performance under ideal conditions.

 Special Announcement
In Remembrance of Merlin Epp: 1938-2007
Long-time friend of Washington Student Leadership Merlin Epp died of a heart attack on October 7. Merlin's larger-than-life personality and boundless energy served the student leadership program for 43 years. As a true educator, he lived the Mt. Rainier Leadership camp philosophy of "preparing the one to empower the many." Merlin touched the lives of thousands of students who continue to affect positive change in their schools and communities. A memorial service for Merlin was held in Seattle on October 21.

ACTIVITIES AND TIMELY TIPS

Nov. 11: Veterans' Day
Look through these Veterans' Day ideas and resources to begin planning a memorable observance.

Resources at www.awsp.org/leadership
link: resources/related links

Along with having favorite restaurants, stores and TV shows...we now have added favorite Web sites to our modern living. Washington Student Leadership is starting a collection of links related to student leadership. Below are three you will find on our related links resource page.

Do Something
Do Something is an excellent, student-friendly site for community service advice. The site's mission is to inspire, support and celebrate a generation of do-ers. The site includes a "Causes" link organized alphabetically with each cause having a section on how to take action, related organizations and resources. Grants are also available through the Do Something organization.

Leadership to Go

Veteran student leadership adviser Ed Cinquini from Oregon has created a site dedicated to student leadership. The purpose of the site is to provide information for students and advisers to build leadership skills and to promote student involvement. The site is free and all Ed asks of you is that you post some of your ideas on the site.
Spirit Works
The Spirit Works company founded by Bob Burton is dedicated to sharing ideas to improve school climate in school. The company's two books are full of ideas for school spirit, games and activities and innovative ways to involve more students in school activities.

OUR SPACE: News from the WASC Board

The age of standards is upon us. Our leadership programs can no longer focus on proms, pep assemblies and posters. Indeed, these are integral parts of the leadership program, but our focus must no longer be the event itself, but how the event will promote student success. With high-stakes education in mind, the WASC Board members took the first step by creating a statewide definition of a student leader that is relevant for today's schools.

Student leaders strive to nurture and empower all students to make a difference in their schools, communities and world. A student leader displays integrity, cooperation and respect toward self and others.

The WASC Board is composed of representatives from across the state from Local Associations of Student Councils (formerly known as Interhighs).
