Predictions That Federal Funds Would Dry Up Without Burns Prove False: Baucus and Tester Deliver for Montana

Sen. Max Baucus and Sen. Jon Tester have brought millions of dollars more in federal money to Montana in the past few weeks—proving false Republican predictions that if voters replaced Conrad Burns with Jon Tester, federal dollars would cease coming to Montana entirely.  Conrad Burns made his delivery of federal funds to the state the cornerstone of his re-election campaign. In 2006, it may be recalled, Republicans frequently said that Montana would see an end of federal funds if Jon Tester were elected.  Burns spokesman at the time, and now Republican Chairman, Erik Iverson said “Burns - with his 18 years seniority - would be greatly missed if replaced with ‘an unknown quantity’ like Tester.”

Montana now is benefiting enormously from two Senators working together for working families’ best interests. The numbers don’t lie.  Senators Baucus and Tester are bringing important federal dollars to our state, and Montana can be proud of the hard work both of them are doing. And these federal funds coming to our state are supporting Montana values.  One additional  advantage today is that these federal funds coming to Montana are no longer being siphoned off by the likes of Jack Abramoff and his corrupt Republican network...more"

GOP Chooses Anti-Woman Crusader to Lead 2008 Candidate Recruitment

Extremist Republicans have placed one of their own, Rep Tom McGillvray (R-Billings), in charge of their legislative candidate recruitment drive. This is the statesman who pushed to repeal Montana’s law preventing health insurance companies from discriminating against women.  As a special favor to the insurance industry, in the 2007 legislative session McGillvray attempted to pass HB 621, which would allow health insurers to cut and eliminate coverage for pregnancy, mamograms, and other essential women’s health services. McGillvray says the benefits "smack of socialism."

Also, it would have allowed insurance companies to charge women more than men for their insurance coverage and health care. Democrats in the House fought it out and defeated the measure. The McGillvray bill went down 48-49.

We assume he’ll be recruiting like-minded pols who think women shouldn’t have equal access to quality, affordable health care. McGillvray has other dubious qualifications for the job. This anti-woman Republican is also the legislator who carried Secretary of State Brad Johnson’s bill to take away Montanans’ right to register and vote on election day.  Can’t wait to see the batch of 2008 Republican legislative candidates.

Jim Rokosch Tapped to Lead Ravalli
County Commission

Thanks to a special election for the County Commission held earlier this month, Democrats are now fully in charge in the Bitterroot Valley. This was unbelievable just a short time ago.  The State Republican organization ran the local GOP effort, and took a severe drubbing.  It was reported in this week’s Bitterroot Star that the newly-elected commissioners voted to make Democrat Jim Rokosch Chairman. Rokosch pledged to work to protect the threatened quality of life in the Bitterroot Valley, and to establish responsible planning and long-term strategies there.

“I believe in public service,” said Rokosch, a biologist in water resource and natural resource management. “I believe in taking responsibility for the way things are and striving to make a difference. I believe in working with others to leave things better than we find them.”  We wish Jim Rokosch the best of luck.

Ravalli County voters spoke loudly and clearly for change--led by solid margins in the three partisan races, leaving the GOP in the dark.

Rep. Lake Blasted in Ravalli County for Blocking Help for Montana Families and Small Businesses

The GOP’s budget boss and Tax Committee Chair, Rep. Bob Lake (R-Hamilton), was blasted today for blocking help for Montana families and small businesses in a guest editorial by Phyllis Bookbinder of Corvallis in this week’s  Bitterroot Star [6-27-07]

"If you were wondering why there wasn't permanent property tax reduction for homeowners this session, it is because it was part and parcel of the efforts to achieve tax fairness stalled or defeated by every Republican on the House Taxation Committee including the Chair, Bob Lake (R-Hamilton)."

Lake and other extremists were: "...unwilling to support even the most basic and fair efforts to collect from tax cheats. Experts estimate that with the right tools, Montana could collect an additional $50 million to $60 million in the next two years. Yet Republicans in the legislature voted to let these tax evaders off the hook—instead leaving Montanans to take care of these unpaid bills…more."

Governor’s Veto Pen Saved Taxpayers $40 Million: Another Accomplishment to Keep Montana on the Move

With all of his vetoes having been sustained, Governor Brian Schweitzer’s actions have saved the taxpayers of Montana almost $40 million.

“I would like to thank the legislature for their votes to sustain these vetoes,” said Governor Schweitzer. “Montana’s on the move with the lowest unemployment in the country.  We cut more taxes for more Montanans than at any time in history. The Legislature has agreed with me that just because we have a surplus doesn’t mean we spend it. This legislature cut taxes, invested in the future and saved for tomorrow.”

Democrats know that property tax relief is critical to strengthen Montana’s middle class.  That's why they fought for and passed legislation to give every homeowner a $400 property tax cut this year, and why they stood up to Republicans and multi-national corporations who think Montanans will fall for a gimmicks that favor out-of-state landowners and corporations. Our Democrats accomplished this and much more in the 2007 session.
