The biological trademark of Hodgkin lymphoma is a type of giant, mutant white blood cell called the Reed-Sternberg cell (seen here as dark brown cells). While most solid cancers consist almost entirely of tumor cells, Hodgkin tumors contain only about 5 percent cancerous Reed-Sternberg cells. The rest are different types of immune cells recruited to fight the tumor, but they are ineffective.

Promising treatment target found in Hodgkin lymphoma
Dana-Farber scientists have identified a protein that prevents the body's immune system from recognizing and attacking Hodgkin lymphoma cells. Based on this finding, the researchers are now investigating targeted therapies to disable this molecular "bodyguard" and boost a patient's ability to fight the blood cancer. Read more

Little Leaguers take their swings for Jimmy

For the past 20 years, children have been helping support research and treatment at Dana-Farber by joining in the Jimmy Fund Little League Program. This summer nearly 4,000 young baseball and softball players participating in summer leagues and tournaments throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire will be trying to strike out cancer along with their opponents. Ironman leads "Posse" to PMC finish line

Extreme athlete Paul Schaye has participated in the PMC for the last nine years as a top fundraiser. Diagnosed with stomach cancer in October, this is his first year riding with the disease.
