Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization's Web site has launched a new section for newly diagnosed patients.

July 2006 Y-ME Illinois e-News

In This Edition:

Y-ME Launches New Web Site for the Newly Diagnosed

Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization’s Web site has launched a new section designed to empower newly diagnosed patients to make well-informed treatment decisions with their health care teams.

The section, My First Steps, is visible on Y-ME’s home page.  When users choose to look at the section, they will find information about recurrence, tumor types, clinical trials, and questions to ask their doctors.  Many of the pages of information link back to other parts of Y-ME's Web site; for instance, “Breast Cancer Information,” “Questions to Ask Your Doctor” and “Understanding Your Pathology Report.”

The information was developed through a close partnership between Y-ME and Genomic Health based on the latest scientific and medical information.  It will allow newly diagnosed women and their families to understand and discuss the many diagnostic characteristics of their breast cancer and the appropriate treatment options with their physicians.

Circle of Help and Healing

October 28, 2006

Honor Your Special Supporter

Haven’t nominated your Special Supporter yet? Don’t delay, nominations must be received by August 1, 2006!

We have received some wonderful and touching nominations and we would like to share a portion of one with you.

Middle of My Circle

by Carole Eisenstein

The surgeon says I need a mastectomy
Words that send one into shock.
He sends me to a stranger
Who will certainly make my world rock.

But oh this man is gentle and as kind as he can be
As he describes the plan he has designed to heal me.

My “Circle of Help” holds this man right in the middle
My “Circle of Healing” leaves no place to fiddle.

And I never will be able to tell him enough
How special and wonderful he is when times were so tough.

So it gives me such great pleasure to honor him this way
Y-ME Illinois & I are thrilled to have Dr. David Slivnick
and his lovely wife Barbara join me here today.

Thank you Carole for your wonderful submission!

Please make sure that you are recognizing your Special Supporter at this year’s 26th Annual Fashion Show and Luncheon “The Circle of Help and Healing” on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006, at the Hilton Chicago by sending in your nomination. You do not need to write a poem or short story - you can take just a few sentences to tell us why your Supporter means so much to you.

A few select survivors and their special supporters will be chosen to be models in the 2006 Fashion Show in a random drawing. All entries will be acknowledged at this year’s Y-ME Illinois Fashion Show & Luncheon.

You can download a nomination form online. If you have questions, please contact Rosemary Drexel at rdrexel@y-me.org or 312-364-9071.

Pink Streak runners and supporters share running stories and more at the 2006 Pink Streak Kick-Off.
Pink Streak Off and Running!

On June 22nd Pink Streak Runners gathered at Rehability for their Kick-Off event. It was a great evening of food, fun and sharing running stories and fundraising successes! Thank you to Pink Streak sponsor, Rehability Multi-Specialty Spine and Sports Medicine, for hosting the event.

Runners were motivated by the highlights from the 2005 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon, inspired by fellow Pink Streaker Kate Chandler who spoke of her mother, a Champion Marathoner who lost her battle with breast cancer, as her inspiration for running Pink, and educated by Rehability’s Doctors and Specialists who shared their knowledge and guidance for healthy running.

Sound like fun and want to get involved?

It’s not too late to Run Pink in the fight against breast cancer! For more information, visit the Pink Streak Web site or contact Ciara at cmcgrath@y-me.org.

LIVESTRONG Survey for Post-Treatment Cancer Survivors

The Lance Armstrong Foundation is conducting an anonymous survey of cancer survivors who have completed treatment. The survey will provide the Foundation with valuable information about physical, emotional and practical challenges of cancer so that we may provide even better tools and information to help people affected by cancer live life on their own terms.

You are eligible for this survey if:

  • You have finished treatment for cancer.
  • You have finished treatment for cancer but you are still taking medication, such as tamoxifen, to prevent new or returning cancer.
  • You have finished treatment for cancer but are still seeing your doctor to check for new or returning cancers.

Learn more about taking this survey online.
