Israel at 60!
Birthdays are always cause to celebrate. BIG birthdays call for celebrations, too,
but I find that they also provoke a lot more reflection as they approach. These big birthdays are great opportunities for us to ponder our place
in life, our accomplishments and future goals. It is also a time for our loved ones to share with us what we mean to them. As Israel
approaches her big birthday of 60 this month, we, as a community of those who cherish her, have a unique chance to consider what Israel means to
us. We Jews outside of Israel live in a dynamic and creative relationship with Israel. Like all relationships, this one, too, needs
constant tending, nurturing and even challenging, at times.
Many of us have known only a world that contains an independent Jewish state
of Israel and may take her existence for granted. Others of us have witnessed the miraculous birth of the
Jewish State and may feel an intimate kinship with her destiny. Whatever our experience and relationship, now is a perfect time to
reinvigorate our ties to Israel, to explore our connections, to invest our resources in building an Israel that is, indeed, a shining example to the
nations, and to create and strengthen our emotional and psychological bonds with our Jewish homeland.
As we emerge from Passover and journey towards Sinai and the Land of Israel, the
organization, Rabbis for Human Rights, suggests four questions for us to consider that may help us mark Israel's birthday in

a meaningful way. As we engage in these questions, we may also want to share our answers with family
and friends in order to learn of their experiences. Here are the questions: 1.What has Israel meant to you in your life? 2. What are
your memories of important moments in the history of Israel? 3. What connects you to Israel? 4. Imagine Israel 60 years from
now. What do you envision?
For me, Israel has been one of my most powerful Jewish experiences. It was through living in Israel that my
Jewish identity was shaped as I came to understand that I was a part of the history, land and people of Israel in an inextricable way. It was in
Israel that I felt like I truly belonged, where I felt whole. My path to becoming a rabbi actually has its roots in my many experiences in
Israel.I have two very powerful memories of when my life intersected with important moments in the life of Israel. The first is the Yom Kippur
war in 1973, which broke out just days before my Bar Mitzvah. I remember being glued to the radio every day, waiting to hear the news.
Though quite young, I remember the relief I felt on my Bar Mitzvah, at Sukkot, when Israel was finally safe. My bond to Israel was initially
forged in that intense shared experience. The other experience that I will never forget is being in Israel on the day of July 4th, 1976 (during
my Confirmation trip to Israel, my first of 13 trips), when Israel engineered the amazing raid on Entebbe to free the hostages who were being held
captive in Uganda. There was an incredible feeling of joy, exhilaration and pride coursing through the streets. It was an amazing day to
be in Israel, the Jewish homeland.
Today, I am connected to Israel by the countless experiences I have had there and the
incredible people I have met who live in Israel. Israel reflects for me my deepest passions about what the Jewish State can and should be.
That is why I care so deeply about the kind of place Israel is. I want Israel to represent the very highest ideals that we as a Jewish people
cherish. So as I look to the next 60 years, I hope that Israel will become that place of blessing and peace that we have long hoped for. I
hope that in the next 60 years Israel will live in peace and prosperity with all of her neighbors. Please be sure to join us for a fabulous weekend
on May 2-4, with Alexandra Benjamin from Melitz, as we explore our relationship to Israel together. Then come with us to Sacramento on May 11 to
Salute Israel at 60. These events promise to be cause for a grand celebration and will offer us meaningful ways to deepen our connections to
Israel.
With blessings for Peace,

A Note to the Congregation from Davis Community Meals
Dear Rabbi Wolfe & Members of Congregation Bet Haverim: Davis Community Meals would like to sincerely thank Congregation Bet
Haverim for being part of the community effort to provide an evening meal of sandwiches and/or pizza for guests and volunteers at the 5th Street Cold
Weather Shelter this Winter season. As you may know, many faith groups as well as UCD students participated in this effort on a weekly rotating
basis from November 19 - March 31.
Thank you so much for Bet Haverim's part in nourishing and refreshing our guests for over 130 nights. The contribution of
every volunteer is valuable in this community effort to combat hunger and aid the homeless. We are also especially grateful for the efforts of
your group's coordinator, Shoshana Zatz. Her work in recruiting and scheduling volunteers to cover the weeks assigned to Congregation Bet
Haverim was a crucial step in the process of providing food throughout the cold and rainy season.
Please accept our gratitude, on behalf of Davis Community Meals and all of the people who benefited from your generous
work.
Sincerely, Janet Lane Sandwiches for the Shelter Co-Coordinator and Secretary, DCM Board of
Directors jrlane@ucdavis.edu; 530.758.7235 |

Lost in too many Jewish Symbols?
Our 2nd grade Family Program was for you!
2nd graders and their families spent the morning hours of Sunday April 6 studying Jewish
symbols they see and use in our sanctuary and in their homes. The museum of symbols we created was enriched with heirlooms from home and was enlivened
with personal stories parents and children shared about the treasures they brought. Families gathered around the open Torah, explored its special
format, heard about different guidelines regarding its writing, and so forth. Children created beautiful personal silk Sh'ma scarves to take
home.
Passover Was Not Passed-Over in CBH Religious School!
On Sunday April 13th, students in all grades learned, experienced and enjoyed Pesach (the Hebrew
name of the holiday; it means pass over). Students in grades 5th -7th rotated through three stations and in each one, they looked at the holiday from
different perspectives. They learned about Jewish communities around the world, savored the many kinds of charoset these communities developed,
tasting for ingredients and voting for the best one. They grappled with Jewish heroes and values in the Exodus story and studied the meaning of the
symbols of the Seder. Grades 3rd - 4th learned about Moses as a leader and grades K-2nd were slaves who built pyramids and made charoset, played
a frog game, enjoyed a clay project of Moses in the basket, and crossed the Sea of Reeds to freedom. I hope that as you celebrated this Passover, your
children had an opportunity to share with you some of the wonderful material they have been learning in our school.

Keshet News
"Chocolate Seder" where parsley is green m&m's, charoset is a chocolate mixture and wine is
chocolate milk, was our unique and fun tool to teach Keshet students about Passover. During the one hour Seder, 10th graders shared ideas for new
symbols on the Seder plate, 9th graders, who have been studying social justice, taught us about the Karpas and the mitzvah of feeding the hungry (Ha
Lachma Hanya) and 8th graders came up with ideas of questions the 4 sons might ask about Tikkun Olam.
May 7th is the last session of Keshet this school

DNJJY
News
Spring is one of my four favorite seasons and this year it's going to be even better because
we have so much going on. This month is packed full of exciting events.
May 9- Shabbat dinner and services at Hillel with DRTY.
May 10- Havdalah, Yogurt Shack, and a Movie in Downtown Davis.
May 17- Bowling at the Memorial Union at UC Davis.
Stay tuned to your email for the Spring Calendar.
DRTY News
I want to start by saying how excited and proud I am to be taking over such a great group of teens. While DRTY has run into
some problems this year these teens, and especially their board, have stayed the course and kept going and triumphed. Almost entirely on their own
they organized an event last month and took 25 people to San Francisco to clean beaches and celebrate J-Serve Day. Once again I am full of excitement
as I take on this group and work to guide them. Like I said above, its Spring time, a time that represents rebirth and renewal. It's perfect
because that's exactly what DRTY is going through. We are going out with a bang this Spring so the momentum will stay up and we will start with
a bang in the Fall.
Here are some dates to remember:
May 9- Shabbat dinner and services at Hillel with DNJJY.
May 20 -Lounge Hangout Night at Bet Haverim.
June 1-Pool Party and DRTY Elections (Location TBA) If you are available to host our pool party on June 1
please let me know ASAP. If you have any questions about events or the youth group please feel free to email me or the DRTY President Jessica at cbh_drty@yahoo.com.

The April meeting of the CBH Board was held on April
3rd. MK Menard, executive director, reported that Blake's (HVAC) has recommended some preventive work before summer. Up to $2000 from
the building fund was approved for annual maintenance. Most pledge income has been received for this fiscal year, however, collecting what is
outstanding remains essential. The office will be sending out reminders for congregants to clear
their accounts before the end of the fiscal year (June 30th.) Rabbi Greg announced
that many attended the Megillah reading for Purim, the Seder reservations were coming in, and the Shabbaton weekend has been planned by Kol
HaNefesh group.
Board panels are ready to meet, as is the programming review committee.
Cantor Brian will return to CBH to lead services;Yom Hashoah in
Sacramento is April 30. The CBH annual meeting is June 8 at 1pm, and announcements will shortly be going out. The board approved a $250,000
mortgage pay down from the reserve for fiscal year 2007-08, as called for in our pro forma.
The CBH Annual Congregational Meeting will be
held Sunday, June 8, at 1:00 PM, in the Sanctuary.

Israel @ 60 Events!
Weekend of May 2-4, 2008
CBH's Israel @ 60 program, featuring Alexandra Benjamin, Melitz Educator
from Israel. Melitz is an independent, nonprofit organization in Israel that fosters strong connections between Israel and Jews elsewhere. Alexandra
Benjamin is a native of London, England, who made aliyah five years ago. She is an experienced Jewish educator with a Masters degree
in Jewish Studies from University College, London. She has worked with groups from all over the world and in the United States, where she has
presented programs to schools, synagogues, and Hillel on several campuses. Alexandra's visit to CBH will coincide with our annual Yom Ha-atzmaut
(Israeli Independence Day) celebration on Sunday.
Schedule of Events
Friday, May 2nd
after 7:30 PM services:
A Democratic Jewish State: Achieved? Still
Striving?
In the eleven years since the assassination of Israel's Prime Minister,
Yitzchak Rabin, z"l, Israel has had 5 elections, 6 governments and 5 Prime Ministers. Participants will explore such issues as "What does it mean to
be the only democratic state in the Middle East?", "Are Jewish values and democratic values compatible?", "What does it mean to be a
minority in a Jewish state?" and "What are the biggest challenges facing Israeli democracy today?"
Shabbat, May 3rd
9:00 to 10:00 AM: Torah Study Session with Alexandra. Two Jews in a Desert: From Yom HaShoah to Yom
Haatzmaut, From Wandering to Survival
4:00 PM: Constructive vs. Destructive: An Instructive Look at Criticizing
Israel
This program is structured like a debate or court case. A Jewish campus group brings an Israeli organization, extremely
hostile to Israeli policy, to American campuses. This was a real issue last year that the Israel Campus Coalition faced. Participants are
assigned various positions on this issue, which may or may not be close to their own positions. We also introduce Jewish texts and study them to see
if they provide us with an answer on the question.
5:30-6:30 PM: Reception and informal chats
6:30 PM: Informal pasta and salad dinner from Strings
8:15 - 9:30 PM Jerusalem Through the Eyes and Words of Yehuda Amichai A poetry
text study. Followed by Havdalah
Sunday, May 4th
9:30 AM - 1:00 PM
Events organized by the CBH Religious School, see above or click here for more information.
1:30 - 3:00 PM Jerusalem through Song
A program for youngsters and adults offering an intriguing insight into Israeli culture and history. A variety of songs
including Yerushalyim shel Zahav and Mattisyahu's 'Jerusalem'.
3:15 - 5 PM Bridging the Gap: Israel and the Diaspora
At a recent event in the U.S., Israeli author A. B. Yehoshua said that only Israel, and not Judaism, can ensure the
survival of the Jewish people. The event caused a furor and sparked off an intense debate re-examining the multifaceted relationship between Israel
and the Diaspora. We will talk about being Jewish in the Diaspora and Israel and its implications for the future of Judaism. Also on the
agenda is the place of Israel in the life of a Diaspora Jew and the place of the Diaspora in the life of Israel and Israelis.

Still Kvelling About CBH's Big Night in the
Country! Not only did more than 150 CBH members and friends have a great time at "Kvell in the Country" , but they came
together, also, to raise more than $15,000 net, via admissions, silent and live auctions, Buckaroos and the raffle. The event was held Sunday,
April 13 at the Heidrick Ag History Center in Woodland. To our knowledge, this is the most successful single fundraising event in CBH
history! Mazel Tov to you for participating and making this possible. When our CBH community comes together, the results are
powerful and rewarding...how lucky we are to share this success with one another.
