Little
Kindnesses
I’ve been
thinking a lot lately about the value of “little kindnesses” - small thoughtful acts that make us feel seen and
appreciated. Often they are given to us by our beloveds and sometimes they come from our casual interactions with everyday people
– colleagues, acquaintances, strangers, and even store clerks (in some cases, in a gown with an offering plate of ginger cookies).
I’ve seen, and
felt, the power of a simple gesture; it can be the perfect balm for a bruised soul, the pat of encouragement at just the right moment for a
discouraged being, or a thank you for someone doing something special for someone else. It reaffirms the innate goodness of
people.
To be on the giving
end gives us such a lovely feeling of satisfaction. To be on the receiving end reminds and reassures us of our connection to the
family of things.
Lately I’ve
been grieving quite a few losses in my life and I’ve noticed that it’s these little kindnesses from strangers that mean so much
to me and are helping me heal. It’s not that the concern and loving actions of my beloveds aren’t important but when
someone, unfamiliar with my circumstances, treats me kindly, it does much to replenish the dry, discouraged place in my heart.
In the past, when
I’ve had tough spells, the battered, jaded part of me says, “Yeah , they’re nice to you…just because… but it
doesn’t count because it’s not a long term thing.” But I’m not going to devalue
small kindnesses any more.
Those simple gestures
are restorative medicine for the weary and a powerful tonic for the sturdiest of men and women. They are like tiny threads of
glitter woven into the fabric of our lives – not a pattern or design but something beautiful and enhancing nonetheless.
Small gestures, brief
encounters, random events, one-time exchanges that touch us, inspire us, heal us are every bit as important to our lives as the more intimate
long-term relationships we have. To be on the giving side can give us a glimpse of the power of kindness and help another be
reminded of their unique human preciousness.
So open your eyes,
mind, and heart to loving gestures and share your kindness with plenty of others – the power of it is no “little”
thing.

Guidance
Cards
"Which angel will accompany me with
this?"
This is often what I ask when I use my Healing with the
Angels cards. The angel cards, along with about half a dozen other "guidance" card decks created by Hay House Publishing,
are a kind of spiritual companions that I've used now for many years.
These cards are not tarot cards. Tarot
cards have very specific meanings and layout -spreads that have been practiced for centuries. Tarot card readers usually go
through a great deal of training to use the tarot as an oracle. I think of the guidance cards, on the other hand, as
"messengers" with beautiful imagery and simple words of support and comfort.
My favorite deck is Healing with the Angels by Doreen Virtue.
Each card has a beautiful picture of an angel, some depicted from classic art, some with contemporary images, and each card has a single word
along with the angel picture. (There's also a small companion book with more explanation and guidance about each
card.) I often recommend them as a gift for someone who needs simple support and comfort because they aren't
overwhelming, preachy, or require a lot of reading or emotional processing. The other decks are lovely too.
With Healing with the Fairies, the fairies, the artwork, and the
language are more playful and whimsical, as fairies will be. There are two other favorites, The Grace Cards and the Self-Care
Cards that are filled with feminine images and words that comfort and exude a sense of peace. The also have a simple affirmation on
each card.
These guidance cards are a wonderful tool to help one focus
and connect with the issues of spirit that are important now. Their simplicity and beauty make them a lovely gift as
well. They are perfect for anyone who need some simple, loving comfort and gentle companionship for the spirit above.
