Moving Mountains

Just as life may seem to be an uphill battle for many who live in the inner-city community surrounding Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Fresno, California, the church faced an uphill battle of its own.

They saw unmet needs -- both spiritual and physical -- and set out with big plans to reach out to their community, despite few resources. With God's help, good planning, persistence in pursuing their goal, and help from Strongtower Financial, the church is growing, reaching out and training others to do the same.

"It's been a five-year process and we knew we needed to move to be able to grow," said Pastor Edward Lee, Jr.

One of the steps along the way, meant the church would have to move out of its building and into a school to allow for growth.

"It was tough to go from a sanctuary to a school, but we needed the room," Pastor Lee said. "Meeting at the school meant setting up and tearing down every week. It was a labor of love, but it was labor. God blessed our labor and we really grew."

After receiving a phone call about a church that was vacating their 28,000-square-foot facility with 70 classrooms, Pastor Lee saw great potential for his church. This facility had space that would allow the church to train children, parents as well as missionaries.

"I saw what we could be doing," he said. "We didn't have to dump money into the ground and we could get started right away. The facility was located right in the center of town and our ministries are now flourishing there."

Mt. Olive moved in and leased the property with the intent to purchase when funds were available. After trying to raise the funds on their own, the church turned to Strongtower for financing help and capital stewardship campaign consulting.

"We had an in-house campaign that was okay," Pastor Lee said. "Then, Gary [from Strongtower Stewardship] came and it worked really well. That's when we knew this would work."
