Our Volunteers are the Gift That Keeps on Giving

As the holidays approach, Y-ME Illinois wants to highlight the gift of volunteer time that supporters like you give all year round. From special events to outreach and educational programs to administrative tasks, our volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization. In October alone, volunteers logged over 160 hours – that’s more than the equivalent of having an additional full time staff person! And this is just the time we can measure – which doesn’t include our committee members and board members who continue to work long after they have “clocked out”.

According to the Independent Sector, the value of a volunteer hour is over $18! Please realize that your gift of time does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. Without the hundreds of volunteers, we would never begin to realize our mission of ensuring that no one faces breast cancer alone. We hope everyone has a joyous holiday season and that those who have given so generously to Y-ME Illinois this past year are given a bright and prosperous new year!

To become a volunteer or to get more involved, fill out an application online or call Abby at 312.364.9071 for more information!

Long History of Support in Northwest Indiana

Y-ME has had a presence in Northwest Indiana for over two decades, beginning in September 1984, when Susan Cox, a nurse who had been diagnosed with breast cancer began a support group with the help of the National office. The group she started currently meets at Community Hospital the second Saturday of every month and is now facilitated by Dorothy Gillespie, a survivor and long-time Y-ME volunteer. As the need in Northwest Indiana grew, the Pink Ribbon Society partnered with Y-ME Illinois in 2004 to start another group in Valparaiso, at Porter Hospital. In just the past ten years, Y-ME has served over 1000 breast cancer patients in Northwest Indiana and the groups continue to inspire other hospitals and organizations to work with Y-ME and the Illinois Affiliate to increase awareness of breast cancer and to support those who cannot wait for tomorrow's cure.

Meet Our New Special Events Coordinator

Ciara McGrath first joined the Y-ME Illinois team to assist with Fashion Show reservations. It was during that time that her interest in the cause and the organization heightened. Ciara is excited to be part of furthering the mission of Y-ME Illinois, to be working with such wonderfully dedicated and energetic individuals, and to be a part of an organization that touches so many lives in so many ways.

Born and raised in Chicago, Ciara returned to the Windy City after working in New York coordinating a statewide hotline at a small nonprofit advocacy organization. Ciara returned to Chicago to pursue a Masters Degree in Nonprofit Management at DePaul University.  Ciara lives in Chicago with her husband, Enda, and their two dogs, Jack and Finnegan.  She is thrilled to be the newest staff member at Y-ME Illinois!
