Thousands will crowd the Downtown Mall on New Year's Eve to enjoy First Night Virginia's family-friendly celebration.

First Night Virginia is a joyful, family-friendly New Year's Eve celebration of the arts featuring music, magic, dance, theater, and storytelling. From late afternoon until midnight, thousands of people crowd Charlottesville's Downtown Mall to experience 75 performances spread out across 20 venues, capped off by a parade and fireworks.

 

Buttons allow admission to all performances and events. Buttons cost $18 for adults ($15 in advance) and $10 for children ($8 in advance). They can be purchased online and at various locations in advance and at the Omni Hotel on the day of the celebration.

VSA arts Winter Exhibition

Charlottesville/Albemarle VSA arts

Friday, January 9, 6:30-8:00pm

 

Charlottesville/Albemarle VSA arts presents its ninth annual exhibition featuring the work of over 85 artists with a variety of disabilities. The show illustrates VSA arts' mission to "promote the creative power of people with disabilities!"

 

Artists will be present at the opening reception and look forward to discussing their work with viewers. Music by Blue O'Connell on guitar, Margaret Lee on harp, and piano students from the Ivy Creek School.

This year's Mid Winter Eve celebration features acclaimed musician John D'earth, leading the Charlottesville Swing Orchestra.

Ash Lawn Opera Festival Guild

Ash Lawn Opera Festival Guild hosts its annual Mid Winter Eve celebration. This festive gathering includes a wine reception, silent auction, buffet dinner, and dancing into the night. The celebration benefits the Ash Lawn Opera Festival's work to make quality opera performances available to the entire community.

 

Music will be provided by the Charlottesville Swing Orchestra, directed by jazz trumpeter and arranger John D'earth and featuring the stunning vocals of Dawn Thompson. The orchestra will be playing classic favorites such as Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, and George Gershwin.

Creative Conversation Series

Piedmont Council of the Arts

This fall Piedmont Council of the Arts launched the Creative Conversation Series, a forum for arts-related idea exchange and collaboration. The goal of the program is to bring artists, arts organizations, educators, and business and community leaders together to develop strategies for strengthening the arts in our area.

 

PCA's second Creative Conversation, "Marketing Charlottesville as a Creative Community," is fully booked, but guests are invited to stop by and observe any portion of the discussion.

Live Arts presents Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, an epic thriller full of razor sharp wit, cutting lyrics, rich veins of musical genius, and culinary madness that make for a bloody good time.

 

Directed by Live Arts Artistic & Executive Director, John Gibson, Sweeney Todd tells the story of a murderous barber and his meat pies as it explores themes of betrayal, revenge, and passion.
