Thanks for your Support
We would like to sincerely thank everyone for the outpouring of support you have shown Grass Roots by making us your choice for Harry Potter again this year.

It's risky ordering such a large quantity of books, but creating a Harry Potter experience is something we love doing for the community. We know you have opportunities to purchase the book elsewhere - some at a significant discount.

We want you to know that we will never take your support for granted, and we will seek to earn it with each and every opportunity you give us. That's why we throw the best party in town to celebrate our wonderful friends and to send Harry off on his final (?) adventures with our encouragement and admiration.

The books are going fast, so please come by to reserve your copy while supplies last. Prepaid orders receive a discount and VIP admission to our party (see final details below). We have posted several of our special graphics for the party in our store, so stop by and catch a glimpse of Harry’s World. We also have a large image of the special deluxe cover with new clues to unravel.

Note: by order of the Ministry of Magic, we will be closing at 6pm on Friday to prepare for the party!

The Keep

Jennifer Egan

Jennifer Egan grabbed our attention with her 2001 National Book Award finalist, Look at Me, a darkly fascinating novel that intertwined the stories of two troubled women. This chilling follow-up is a deft mix of psychological suspense, unconventional romance, and eerie allegory. Egan perfectly weaves two interlocking-tales-- one in an ancient European castle, the other in a 21st-century prison. But, at their intersection lies a third tale more haunting and disturbing still.

Paperback, $13.95
Publisher: Knopf Publishing Group, ISBN-13: 9781400079742

Chosen by a Horse

Susan Richards

Psychotherapist and animal lover Richards eloquently recounts her relationship with a horse. Hers is the story of how an isolated, emotionally damaged person and an abused animal form a deep bond. Both elegant and heartbreaking, this is an inspiring story of courage and hope and the ways in which all love has the power to heal.

Paperback, $13.00
Publisher: Harcourt, ISBN-13: 9780156031172

More Sand in my Bra: Funny Women Write from the Road, Again!

Julia Weiler, Jennifer L. Leo (Editors)
Local contributor: C Lill Ahrens

Following on the heels of the best-selling Sand in My Bra, this sequel is a collection of hilarious women's travel stories. From Australia to Zambia and everywhere in between, these true stories are full of bust-a-gut laughter. Once the anguish has faded, nothing helps a travel story more than things going wrong, and these adventurers encountered just about every mishap imaginable.

Death Pans Out

Ashna Graves
Known to us as Wendy Madar

Engaging characters, evocative descriptions of eastern Oregon, and a masterful mystery makes Graves' debut a riveting page-turner. Neva Leopold retreats to her uncle’s abandoned mining cabin for peace and healing after a series of losses. Despite her desire for a quiet existence, she tries to find out more about her uncle’s disappearance. Strange events test Neva's courage, leading to a startling resolution that's both macabre and entertaining.

Paperback, $14.95
Publisher: Poisoned Pen Press, ISBN-13: 9781590584750

Twenty Questions

Alison Clement
Local author

Sharp and full of unsettling twists, Twenty Questions is a gripping story that speaks of violence and betrayal, feminism, and reinvention. Above all, it speaks of the human condition to resurrect itself, whatever the cost. Following a strong debut (Pretty Is as Pretty Does), Clement returns with the engrossing story of June Duvall, who believes that through a quirk of fate her life has been spared and another woman murdered in her place.

Paperback, $13.00
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Adult Publishing Group; ISBN-13: 9780743272674

Music

Your Town Tonight

Eliza Gilkyson $17.95

A live CD this Grammy-nominated singer songwriter, the album features songs from recent albums along with a few new covers. The NY Times wrote: "Gilkyson doesn't pull any punches. She graces the music with her lush and passionate voice; a dark and lonely sound, hope and satisfaction, and edgy lyrics with piercing imagery round out the whole."

A Few Simple Verses

James Keelaghan $17.95

Keelaghan is a longtime Corvallis favorite, known for his resonant voice and expressive songs that follow in the great Canadian folk tradition of Stan and Garnet Rogers. The love of song is the theme of Simple Verses. On this album, James sings other people's songs, longtime favourites of his. He says: "Some I learned when I was very young. Some are songs that have been important in my musical development, some I chose for emotional reasons."

Up Front and Down Low

Teddy Thompson $13.95

The son of Richard and Linda Thompson takes a step
toward country, possibly inspired by his involvement
in the Brokeback Mountain soundtrack. Covering some
favorite country acts, Thompson is joined by Iris
Dement, Tift Merritt and Rufus Wainwright.

Beauty and Crime

Suzanne Vega $18.95

Beauty and Crime is perhaps Vega’s deepest, yet most accessible album since her recording debut Luka 20 years ago. The songs have a cosmopolitan flair, with Vega's hometown New York City a lead character. Now on the jazzy Blue Note label, the emphasis is still on Vega's unique voice and phrasing.

Lumiere

Bob Brozman $16.95

Brozman can play anything with strings and is always eager to demonstrate some new instrument Few have done so much to broaden audiences’ horizons. Whereas
previous albums have paired him with masters from
around the world, Lumiere finds him playing almost
every instrument. From the opening fanfare of Tango Medzinarodny, played on a Finnish harp, you know you are in for an unconventional ride.

Final Potter Party Plan
Please join us for our final excursion to Hogwarts as we relive some of our favorite moments from the previous six books and use our imaginations to guess what awaits Harry in book seven, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Special guests will include the AAA Theater performing skits and contributing character personalities to our theme-based activities. We will have the Mirror of Erised, a Steaming Cauldron of Spells, Muggle Mad Libs, Transfiguration Class, Potions Master, Face Painting, “Pin the Badge on Dolores," Owl Grams, and of course one or two Trivia contests. By popular demand, the Knight Bus Conductor will return as our esteemed Master of Ceremonies and Trivia host!

To keep your energy up, we'll provide pizza from American Dream, licorice wands, juice, and perhaps some additional snacks for sustenance.

Recognizing the special nature of this final release party, we will conduct a N.E.W.T. training and host a discussion of what might happen in book 7. Bring your ideas and prepare for a stimulating look at the unsolved and hidden clues in the first six books!

As a final thank you for your support over the years, we will have drawings for the artwork created for these parties plus other Potter Paraphernalia. All people with prepaid vouchers will be eligible for the drawing, and we'll post the list of winners at Grass Roots on Monday morning.

Please note: all children under 13 must be accompanied by a responsible adult or family member.

I’m now one of the lucky people who have a job they’d do for free (sssshhhh…don’t tell Jack!) My recent retirement from the corporate world has given me the time to have fun writing about two things I feel passionate about – books and music. Grass Roots has always been an artistic focal point for me. When I crave a book that will hook me or want to hear a new artist, I can count on the GR staff to point me in the right direction. Now, I have the opportunity to help them do the same for you. For people who love biographies, here’s mine (abridged). I was raised in Philadelphia and moved to Corvallis in 1972 to attend OSU. From 1980-2007, I worked at HP as a technical writer and interface designer. For many years, I coordinated concerts for the Corvallis Folklore Society. My major hobbies (other than reading and listening to music) are photography, playing music, and gardening. Perhaps you’ve seen my kaleidoscope greeting cards in the store; Sandy and Jack have been hugely supportive in showing me that other people might enjoy the output from my right-side brain.
