What's New?
New Baby at Hemlock
Our new baby - isn't she cute?

We're proud to announce a new family member at Hemlock. But it's not a Kouwenhoven - it's a Heidelberg. With ten 40" units, a perfector and a convertible aqueous coater, this press is our largest baby yet. Our new addition, lovingly called "H10", comes with the most advanced technology on the market including closed loop colour control for a perfect match every time and a whack of preset functions that reduce set-up time.

Enough with the details - how will H10 work for you?

Sure, the prospect of designing a ten-colour job is exciting, but you'll really love this baby for its one pass productivity. Double-sided printing in a single pass with high quality results means reduced set-up time, reduced running time, reduced press check time and, you guessed it, reduced cost - all with the same level of quality that you expect from Hemlock.

With a convertible aqueous coating unit, H10 enhances our collection of coating presses. Now we can coat on four different presses at three different sizes - small, medium and large format. This means that your jobs can run on multiple machines at once for quick turnaround. And because all of our presses are Heidelberg, matching colour and quality from press to press is seamless.

So give us a call to schedule your first job - our baby is so advanced she's already running!

Demystifying the Print-Ready PDF
Tricks of the Trade

Have you ever been shocked when your perfect PDF file doesn't print as you expected?

In 2002, a group of graphic arts professionals formed the Ghent PDF Workgroup to create standards for creating print ready PDF files. They worked with companies like Adobe and Quark and created downloadable settings that you can install into your applications in order to create perfect print ready PDF’s each time.

We’ve taken these settings and made them available for our most frequently used applications.

Earth Work
Trashing Our Trash
This is Kate, our Sustainability Communications Coordinator, diving in for a closer look.

One early morning in June, three dedicated Hemlock Sustainability Committee members dove into our dumpster to analyze 24 hours worth of trash. In case you can't tell, this is a picture of Kate, our Sustainability Communications Coordinator, diving in for a close look.

What did they discover? Our fragrant friends found that 50% of our trash was recyclable or compostable. We already recycle all of the materials used in the production process. But this made it clear that we needed to improve the system in our offices.

So what did we do? We installed plastic recycling and compost stations in all our kitchenettes to complement the existing paper and metal recycling bins. Then, many of our office staff gave up their garbage cans and reduced their waste output to zero. Finally, we added paper towel compost bins to every washroom.

And the results? In just four months, we've reduced our trash by 50%, decreased our weekly waste pick-ups and projected a savings of over $3,000 per year.

More Benny's Come to Hemlock
Benny - The 'Oscar' of Print
Yippee! We brought home three more Benny's and 34 other awards from the 2006 Premier Print Awards. That makes us feel loved - but we could not have put our expertise to the test without the challenge and inspiration of your print jobs.

These Benny wins demonstrate our focus on evolving technology. Our "Electronic Manipulation" Benny was awarded for a stunning book of vivid photographs reproduced with five black inks. That's right people - not duotone, not quadtone - it's a quintone! Featuring the beautiful photography of Patrick Alt, Unknown Tuscany was published by Mammoth Plate Press.

The "Campaign" Benny recognized our own direct marketing campaign, delivered to BC business leaders in a handmade FSC certified wooden box and printed using variable data on our HP Indigo 5000 digital press.

LensWork Magazine received the "Magazine Series" Benny this year. This remarkable photography magazine features striking images reproduced in custom duotones. Thanks to our InSite technology, the bi-monthly production of LensWork is highly efficient with all files and proofs submitted and reviewed on-line. This saves our client, located in Anacortes WA, time and money. Check out LensWork here.

Give us a call to see samples of these, and other award winning projects.
