Benefit Night with Ten Thousand Villages
On Wednesday, March 5th from 5-9pm, Ten Thousand Villages will be hosting a night of
giving to benefit GENaustin.
Established in 1946, Ten Thousand Villages USA pioneered the concept of
fair trade by buying crafts directly from artisans in the developing world, paying them a living wage for their work and developing long term
relationships with them. For over 60 years, Ten Thousand Villages has helped to provide fair wages, working capital and a North American market
for more than 100 artisan groups in more than 30 countries throughout Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East.
Ten Thousand Villages offers a wide variety of household accessories, books, toys,
jewelry and foods such as chocolate, tea and coffee that are often made with organic ingredients.
Ten Thousand Villages will donate between 10-15% of the evening's sales
between 5-9PM to GENaustin, which will go directly to supporting clubGEN and Girl Talk programs.
So come out and show your support for Girls Empowerment and Fair Trade!

oriGENal Voice Month at GENaustin
We are proud to introduce this month-long campaign that aims to motivate and educate students on how to
promote social change through self-awareness, self-empowerment, and advocacy. During the month of March, every clubGEN after-school program at
all AISD middle schools will be participating in the oriGENal voice Campaign Month (OV Month).
Middle and high school girls will choose from one of the following preselected topics on which to educate their
peers:
- Dangers of cyber bullying
- Dangers of Tobacco
- Dangers of Unhealthy Relationships
Throughout the month, clubGEN participants will learn about their topic, create powerful media campaigns with
effective messages and tips surrounding their issue, and then advertise their campaigns on their school campuses. All campaigns will be aimed
at educating peers and encouraging other students to make healthy choices in their lives. The campaigns may include posters, morning
announcements, skits to be performed, and other creative projects the girls dream up.
Be sure to read next month's newsletter to find out how the girls at every middle school in
Austin made a difference by helping to put an end to cyber bullying, tobacco-use and unhealthy relationships in their lives!

clubGEN Girls Break Down Stereotypes
Last month, a week of clubGEN curriculum was dedicated to Stereotype Busting. Each club created a
"wall of stereotypes" by writing down descriptions of stereotypes onto a large sheet of paper, which they then posted on the wall. The
facilitators then led discussions about deconstructing stereotypes by questioning the message each written label conveyed. Finally,
the girls drew unique, colorful flowers that represented the real person behind each stereotype and covered the destructive words with
their flowers.
