We know that not all of you can attend the regular monthly meetings of the City Council, for that reason, we want to use this newsletter to keep you informed as to the activities of your local government. UGA Visits Apalach

University of Georgia (UGA) students arrived in June as part of a three-year Riverways South project to study the ACF riversystem from Columbus, Georgia to Apalachicola. more

 

City of Apalachicola Goes Electronic

The City of Apalachicola recently converted much of its public information to electronic format for easy public access. Information such as meeting dates, agendas and minutes can now be accessed on the City's website www.cityofapalachicola.com. In addition, the website now offers news highlights, links to important public record information and feature articles on some of the City's distinctive public buildings and museums. 


Visitors to the site can download permit applications, review the City's land use regulations, comprehensive plan, historic guidelines and even review ongoing City Grant projects through the planning and grants link. more

Chief Bobby Varnes Steps Up

Bobby Varnes, the newly selected Apalachicola police chief, is pledging a stepped-up community outreach while he eyes cuts in next year's budget." I just want to be fair," he said. "I want to work with people the best I can. more


Cultural Art and History Board Established
The City of Apalachicola recently approved the creation of the City's first History, Culture and Arts Committee. This committee was established by the City Commission in June  to coordinate, plan, organize implement and secure funding for city owned museums, culture centers and visual/performing arts facilities. more
 
City Grants Program
On Schedule
The City is currently administering several grants for improvements throughout the City. The following is a update on the major projects.
 
RIVERFRONT PARK PIER:  The City Commission awarded the contract for renovations to the Riverfront Park at the June Commission meeting.  Completion of this renovation will result in a brand new 420' boardwalk/pier

Longtime City Employee retires

Hildur Sorenson, known around town as "Bubba" or "Hildagard" is calling it quits after 36 years of service to the City.  Hildur started working with the City on February 2, 1972 and his official last day of employment was May 29, 2008. more

 

Veterans Dedication July 12 

The dedication ceremony for a regional Veterans memorial park in Apalachicola will be held July 12, 2008. The culmination of a seven year million dollar effort will feature a bronze partial replica sculpture of the Three Servicemen Statue - the original of which stands on the National Mall in Washington's Constitution Gardens. More
