Moms In touch

We prayed this verse for the students: 2Timothy 1:7-8a   "For God did not give you a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord."

“Don’t be frightened by the size of the task, for the Lord my God is with you; he will not forsake you.  He will see to it that everything is finished correctly.”  I Chronicles 28:20 (TLB)

Moms In Touch is a gathering of moms from all three divisions who meet in Shropshire Commons Room (in Wesley Hall) at 8:10 am for an hour on Mondays to pray for our children, faculty, and school.  There is no requirement for attending a Moms In Touch meeting other than the desire to pray for your child.  Please come as often or as infrequently as you’d like, and know that your willingness to pray will bless your community in deep ways. If you cannot make the meetings but still wish to pray with us, or for more information, please contact Karen Guess at kguess@comcast.net or Lori Coxhead at coxhead1@juno.com. You are welcome to join us on Monday.

Serving the Wesleyan Community

The 2008-2009 J.O.Y. Committee

The 2008-2009 Parents Club J.O.Y. Calendar is up and running.  The purpose of the calendar is to provide an easy vehicle for coordinating meals for Wesleyan families in need.  Effective immediately, the calendar can be accessed in one of two ways:

1) Through the Wesleyan School website (click "Parents" and then "J.O.Y. Calendar"); or

2) Directly through the following link:  http://freecal.brownbearsw.com/Wesleyancalendar

(NOTE:  "Wesleyancalendar" must be typed all as one word, no space between "Wesleyan" and "Calendar")

Last year, we were plagued with calendar crashing issues.  We are hopeful that the new company will give us the consistency we need.  Thank you to the many families who signed up to provide relief to families in crisis throughout this past year.  The J.O.Y. Committee's prayer for us as a community this year is to broaden that base of volunteers.  May your hearts be moved to serve the Wesleyan community in many ways, including the meals ministry.  Please contact any of the J.O.Y. Committee Chairs with questions or a desire to help.  The Chair and Co-Chairs are as follows:

Chair - Michele Rowland (770-777-3277)

Lower School Co-Chairs - Kelly Doran (770-447-8921) or Julia Cook (770-582-6370)

Middle School Co-Chairs - Renee Anderson (770-449-5522), Toni Raabe (770-663-0667), or Gina Solomon (770-619-5796)

High School Co-Chairs - Sue Blair (770-640-6257) or Robin Hartwell (770-992-8382)

Troop 1963 News

Troop 1963 spent a week this summer at Woodruff Scout Reservation working on 60+ Merit Badges, then traveled to Boonesboro Village in NC and spent a week in the late 18th Century! The boys make sheath knives and leather sheaths, wooden utensils, and cooked all meals over an open fire with wood they chopped!

We are embarking on another active and exciting year with trips planned to Tennessee, the Appalachian Trail, Cumberland Island, and Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.  This weekend we will travel to the Lost Sea in TN.  It is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest underground lake in the U.S.  We'll explore where the Cherokee Indians and Confederate Soldier left their marks!

We are currently holding our annual Popcorn Fundraiser, so be on the lookout for some fine young men in uniform approaching you soon!

Also, please save and consign or donate your gently used winter weather sports equipment and clothing for our 1st Annual "Yard Sale", Oct. 23-25.   You can get information about this exciting new fundraiser by emailing Fundraising Chair Scott Murphy, DSMurphy@dsmurphy.com

LS Bible Blast

The beginning of the 2008-'09 school year has brought new beginnings in Bible.  The students are not only learning how to use their bibles, but why they are so important to us.  They have already learned several books of the bible and their meanings.  For instance Genesis - The Beginning.  How appropriate!

The core virtue of the month is INITIATIVE and the bible verse Philippians 2:4 - "Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interest of others." We have noticed many students rising to the occasion of "seeing what needs to be done and doing it".  Way to go Lower School!

Kindergarten -  The Kindergarteners are learning the Seven Days of Creation.  Ask your Kindergartener what day man (Adam) was created.  (6th day).  See if he/she can share what the Hand Prayer is and what each finger stands for.

Pre 1st and 1st -  "Order" is an important part of our world and our first graders are learning how God set the perfect example when he created the world.  Ask your first graders what existed in the very beginning of time (darkness).  What were the very first words God spoke to begin the creation of the world? ("Let there be light.") How did God make man? (He blew the dust from his hand and created Adam).  Who named the animals? (Adam)  How was Eve created? (From Adams side) Why is it  important we get ready for school in a particular order?  Enjoy their answers.

2nd gradeThis week we have been studying about Heaven and what the bible says it is like.  Ask your second grader what the last book in the bible is (Revelation) and who we will see face to face in heaven (God).  What is a revelation?  (Remember the box illustration and how items were "revealed" to them).  Let them describe Heaven for you - you'll be so surprised.  Also the second graders are learning the bible is made up of books, chapters and verses and how to find a particular passage.  This takes time but so worth it.

3rd grade - Learning that testament means promise, and Gospels mean Good News, the third graders are re-acquainting themselves with scriptures throughout the Old and New Testament, and getting prepared to study "The Father of a New Nation."   We read Max Lucado's book, "A Hat for Ivan" and they came up with very creative hats of their own.

4th grade - The fourth graders are memorizing the books of the New Testament as well as studying the prophecies.  There are hundreds of events in the Old Testament telling of what is to become in the New Testament, and the students will concentrate and study a selected ten.  They learn what is/was to "foretell" and see how the Word of God is not only consistent but it can be trusted.  Miss Wilson's class has participated in the V-Tv for chapel, singing the scripture in John 8.  Thank you for your leadership!

Happy "New Year" from the LS Guidance Office!

Around this time of year, I get the same question over and over from many of our new kindergarten students: "What does a school counselor DO?"  It's a great question!  Allow me to take a minute to remind you of services that I provide:

  • Classroom guidance lessons: I have already done one lesson in every class in the Lower School, and will continue throughout the year to visit every class to teach lessons on a variety of topics, including: time management, goal setting, friendship skills, bully business, personal safety, and more.
  • Teacher/staff consultation: I meet with all of our teachers formally on a monthly basis, and more frequently at their request so that we can review the progress of our students on an educational and social/behavioral perspective.
  • Parent consultation/training: The Parent U program goes in to high gear next week with our first "Parenting with Love and Logic" class, hosting a group of 50 parents! This class will be offered again during this school year, and other topics will be offered through Parent U this year as well. I am also available to meet with you at your request to help you with any issues you wish to discuss.
  • Student consultation: I often meet with individual students or small groups of students, at their request or sometimes at the request of the teacher/parent. My goal is to help students problem solve and plan with school issues (and sometimes non-school issues) so that when they get back to class, they have 100% of their attention on what the teachers are teaching!

So, that's the answer to the question, "What does a school counselor DO?"  I work with teachers, students, and families to help everyone be prepared to face their challenges, proactively working toward solutions and good choices!  If there is a way I can help you or your child, please feel free to contact me.

The Dozier Library Adopt-A-Book Campaign

The Dozier Library would like to say a BIG thank you to the many students who participated in our Adopt-A-Book campaign.  Thanks to the generosity of our Lower School parents, we were able to add over 250 new books to the Dozier Library collection.   Many thanks to the families who participated in this campaign and helped grow our library.  The best part of Adopt-A-Book is the excitement generated by the new titles and hearing the students repeatedly ask, “When can I check it out?”  A very special thank you goes to Pam Coole (Megan 11th grade) who graciously and efficiently typed all of the donation book plates.

Please remember that books are available for adoption all year long.  You may dedicate a book in honor of a favorite teacher or in memory of a family member or other special person.  The gift of a book is a gift that many will enjoy for years to come.  Please feel free to contact the Lower School Dozier Library with any questions about book adoptions.

With grateful appreciation,

Juanita Tyler and Julie Rosenkranz

10TH Grade Parenting Program

“R&R: “Revved Up and Ready - 16 and Free”

Presented by Wesleyan School and the Wesleyan Parents Club

Parents from the first session reported, “This was well worth our time. We did learn new information and were reminded of how much we need to discuss our expectations regarding driving and decision-making with our teen.”

10th Grade Parents, do you ever ask yourself…

  • Now that my child is driving, will I ever see him/her again?
  • How are other parents handling this transition?
  • Have I been clear in setting ground rules for this privilege?
  • What are some of the current dangers Wesleyan students are facing?

What: The Parenting Programs Committee has worked closely with Chris Cleveland, based on parent requests, to provide an updated parenting program for those who now have or are about to have teen drivers. We will offer four sessions, and have dedicated facilitators who have gone before you in making this transition.

The sessions will consists of DVD presentations, discussion, a presentation by Gwinnett County police officer, Dan Lorenz, feedback from parents who have been through the transition of parenting teen drivers and time for question and answers.

Who: We are targeting parents of 10th graders although any high school parent is invited.

Where: All four sessions will be held at Wesleyan, in the McKeever Room.

When: Sessions are free, and will last for two hours. You only need to attend one two-hour session.

Session 2:   Sunday, October 5th                 2:00-4:00

Session 2:   Sunday, October 19                 2:00-4:00
