President's Message

By Colleen Hamilton

Hello fellow California members.

What an October, what great weather!  It is a wonderful time to be outside designing, consulting and/or building beautiful landscapes.  We designers have made exceptional career choices and that includes being part of APLD.  The CA Chapter has been busy building on our existing programs and working to grow our association.  This is a list of some of the work your Chapter has been doing in 2008:

  • Streamline Chapter administrative duties so volunteers get more done in less time which includes integrate user-friendly tech support and strengthen our infrastructure
  • Further develop our newsletter and make it easy for Districts to include their information
  • Continue development of our website which is the best I have seen for any association in the industry
  • Work more closely and effectively with sponsors who help us to further build our knowledge and visibility in the industry
  • Market APLD to the public through shows, multi-speaker events, writer's collective, garden tours, community programs/improvement etc.
  • Develop future educational programs at the Chapter level and support District programs
  • Create a manual so all Districts can benefit from the ideas of other Districts
  • Build our number of Certified designer which furthers our professionalism
  • Build our number of APLD members and mentoring of new members

When the Chapter board accomplishes one thing they just want to create more.  The dedication of our Chapter board is amazing.  These volunteers give tirelessly to complete the membership data in a timely fashion, to put together wonderful monthly newsletters, to develop and monitor our Yahoo site for members to easily communicate, to develop future opportunities and the list goes on and on.

I am also amazed with the incredible programs, meetings and events our Districts hold.  From the North Bay to the Peninsula, to San Francisco and east to the East Bay and Sacramento I hear about and see events that are second to none.  Southern California is building excitement too.  They are putting on great programs and will soon have Districts of their own.  Designers throughout California volunteer tirelessly to help make APLD grow.  My hats are off to each of you.  I know how much work it can be, and I also know the benefits of building a strong international association.  Thank you for being part of something bigger than each individual designer.  Thank you for supporting our APLD.

Your 2008 CA Chapter President, Colleen Hamilton

The Edible Garden

Sponsored by

East Bay District

Sharon Gibson, sbgi@att.net

Description

Edible Landscape Design: Promoting the beauty and utility of edible gardens to your clients.

With the explosion of interest in local, organic foods, there has never been a better time to enhance your knowledge of edible landscaping and design techniques. Our presentation will begin with Shelley Somersett sharing how she successfully incorporated edibles into every aspect of her award-winning garden for the 2008 San Francisco Flower and Garden Show. This will be followed by Maureen Decombe, who has specialized in edible landscape design and maintenance since the beginning of her horticultural career.

Learn the one plant that no edible garden should be without, why keeping a bit of lawn might be a good thing for your citrus plants, and what to do in order to make maintenance as easy as possible for your clients. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion as we share tips and tricks to encourage people to eat their gardens!

Shelley Somersett, APLD, is a Past President of both the East Bay District and the APLD California Chapter, and is now serving as our Chapter Membership Chair. A member of Slow Food USA, she is a volunteer at the Slow Food Nation Victory Garden at Civic Center Plaza in San Francisco. Shelley has turned her passion for edible gardens into a very successful aspect of her landscape design business.

Maureen Decombe is currently the Vice President of the APLD California Chapter. Her career with edible plants started with organic farming in the early 1980s. Maureen worked in the Florist & Nursery Crops Lab at the USDA Beltsville Agricultural Research Center in Maryland, was the Bishop's Gardener at the Washington National Cathedral, and interned at the Herb Garden in the US National Arboretum. Maureen is the owner of Green Willow Gardens, a fine garden maintenance and design company specializing in edible landscapes.
