Bravo!
A big thank you to the Mid-Columbia Association of Student Councils and Richland High for organizing a well-attended and meaningful WASC Conference. More than 850 students and their advisers from over 100 schools participated.

GREETINGS
Karen in our office remarked yesterday that the Fall colors are arriving so rapidly she can sit on her deck overlooking the meandering Cowlitz River and watch the daily changes. The comment made me reflect on watching the growth in students. They too have dramatic changes in their social, emotional and intellectual lives as they participate in student leadership. All we need to do to appreciate it is pull up a chair and be still for a while.

RESOURCES & ACTIVITIES

A Year of Looking at Inclusion
The WASC Board has selected the topic of inclusion as a theme for the 2008/09 school year. We have created a PBwiki on inclusion to document success stories, share activities, list resources, store documents and pose questions. We hope you visit our PBwiki throughout the year to add to our collective wisdom.

Washington State Disability Month, October
Last year the Washington State Legislature passed historic legislation proclaiming October "Washington Disability History Month." Students from the Self Advocacy in Motion project spearheaded the campaign that lead to the legislation. The students testified before the legislature with compelling stories about the need for respect, awareness and a basic understanding of not only the disability civil rights movement, but also the historical contributions people with disabilities have made to our world.

Ideas and Resources for the Observance of Veterans' Day
The first Veterans' Day was observed on November 11 in 1918. On this day at 11:11 a.m. three unknown soldiers were buried in Washington D.C., Westminster Abbey in England and the Arc-de-Triomphe in France.

Our Space: THE WASC BOARD
The WASC Board believes that the work of student leaders is crucial to the academic and social success of all students.

In an effort to help local student councils set goals and carryout meaningful work, the students on the WASC Board created a reporting form and rubric for student leadership programs in high performing schools. It is a tool to elevate the work of student leaders and it serves as a recognition program. Schools choosing to receive recognition for their achievements must submit a completed packet for review by May 31, 2009. The form is available online and can be completed electronically.
Guidelines for forming a School Association of Student Councils

The WASC Board has also been active in outlining the guidelines for local associations of student councils, formerly called interhighs. Groups of high schools determine the parameters of their organization and the requirements to be a part of the local association.  To help local associations create purpose-driven groups, the WASC Board has created a reporting form and rubric, which also serves as a recognition program.
