Sorority New Members on Bid Day 2007

Volume 4, Issue 4

Sorority Recruitment is a Success

Sarah Russell

After days of anticipation, excitement, and worry, the potential new members of sorority recruitment 2007 finally got the answers they were looking for on Monday, September 24.  As always, Bid Day was full of excitement as 280 women accepted bids from the six Panhellenic sororities.

The air was filled with anticipation and nerves as the sorority members crowded Walnut Grove, chanting at the top of their lungs.  Potential new members covered the steps of the JUB as they anxiously waited to receive their bids.

Although Bid Day is full of fun, it would not have been possible without many months of hard work and planning.

“We had an unbelievable recruitment staff that had been preparing since January,” said Cassie Venable, Panhellenic President and member of XΩ.  “As an exec board, I think we came together and thought of the perfect theme for Sorority Recruitment 2007, ‘Find Your Passion’.  I think with this theme it allowed each sorority woman to dig deeper and truly recruit for what their organization was founded on.”

In addition to welcoming new sisters, the sororities were finally able to welcome back their Rho Sigmas and Panhellenic Exec members that had been disaffiliated since May.  While they enjoyed working to make this year’s recruitment as successful as possible, the recruitment staff was definitely ready to rejoin their sisters.

“It feels so good to be reaffiliated with my sisters.  Though I loved recruitment and trying to make it the best I could, being with my sisters made it worth so much more,” said Caroline Rutledge, VP of Recruitment for Panhellenic and member of AO∏.

With 280 women accepting bids, each sorority welcomed large pledge classes that were full of outstanding new members.

“We had a lot of wonderful girls go through this year, and each organization gained so many girls who are going to make their organizations stronger and shine so much.  I am happy to say that I am proud of each organization, including my own,” said Rutledge.

Greeks Show Blue Raider Pride at WKU Tailgate

John Carter

There was excitement in the campus air on Thursday evening, not only because the Blue Raider football team was set to open at Floyd Stadium, but also because Greek Tailgate 2007 kicked off in Peck Forest.  Students, alumni, and fans of all types came out to show support in the hours leading up to the game, but no group showed they bleed blue more than our Greek community.  A sea of ties, dresses, and letters flooded the Forest as students gathered under tents, sat around with grills and coolers, and unified for one common purpose:  to celebrate MT football.  It was the largest Greek Tailgate that many students have seen, with an estimated turnout of around 4000 people.

“I can’t remember a tailgate crowd this large since I’ve been here.  I’m really glad Greek Affairs can show the university and Coach Stockstill how much we support them,” said IFC secretary and senior Kelly Wilder.

However, Greek Tailgate was not all about supporting MTSU, as several of our counterparts from Western Kentucky were present.  Around 100 fraternity members from Western Kentucky came to enjoy the tailgating and game per an invitation from our IFC.  This support from another university is something that will only increase with our newest Sun Belt football rival.

Regardless of the final score, the MTSU Greek Community will maintain the mentality shown on their tailgate t-shirts:  “some people say Blue Raider football is a matter of life and death, but we assure you it’s much more serious than that.”

Greek of the Week:

Alpha Tau Omega

Whitney Carr

You know those really cool lightening bolts leading up to Floyd Stadium from Faulkinberry and Old Main Circle?  Well, you have Alpha Tau Omega to thank for that. Their advisor Rick Kershaw, who is also the Director of Student Unions and Programming, brought the task to his chapter’s attention. Alpha Tau Omega’s Tim Eubanks is Game Day Activities Chair in Student Programming and thought this would be a great opportunity for the guys.

At 6 a.m. on a Saturday, the brothers came to campus with plywood stencils and paint. They spent the entire day making sure the new lightening bolts looked just right. In the future, they are planning to continue the bolts onto Greenland Drive.

As if they didn’t have enough to do, the following Saturday brothers donated their time to Challenged Athletes Playing Equally, C.A.P.E., during a hockey tournament.  C.A.P.E. is a non-profit organization located in Murfreesboro that makes it possible for mentally or physically challenged to play sports and other acitivities.

When they aren’t giving their time and resources to help others or to improve the school spirit here at Middle, they are busy recruiting new members.

“Recruitment is going great,” claims Tim Eubanks. “We'll be having events all this week during Recruitment Week and have also had events throughout the summer and first few weeks of school. We began contacting incoming freshmen with high grades in the weeks before CUSTOMS. We've got a great bunch of guys who are already gung-ho about ATΩ and becoming a part of something more.”

What man wouldn’t be excited to join an organization that for the past two years has won President’s Cup, Gold Standard, Outstanding Scholarship Program, have Greek Man of the Year Chris Smith, Outstanding Junior Tim Eubanks and Outstanding Freshmen Jimmy Crytzer. After being founded at MTSU over 35 years ago, ATΩ is stronger than ever. They will continue to be successful by recruiting the highest caliber of men and always put serving others as a chapter priority. Congratulations to Alpha Tau Omega for being the Greeks of the Week!

NPHC Step Off

After just a few weeks of school being in session, the National Pan-Hellenic Council has taken the MTSU campus by storm with events such as GreekFest, Step Off, and Step Afrika.

Step Off took place outside of McCallie dining hall on September 17.  The show was a display of modern step routines choreographed by organizations within the council.  The show served as a warm welcoming to freshmen students on campus.  It also attracted interest for Step Afrika, which followed Step Off in the evening.

“Step Off was a huge success and I want to thank the entire student body that supported the NPHC at the Step Off.  If I could tell the student body one thing, it would be that all ideas are welcome and we want to hear from you so that the NPHC can make your college experience a good one,” said Justin Phillips, President of NPHC and member of Phi Beta Sigma.

After Step Off, students moved to Tucker Theater to watch Step Afrika, which was hosted by Student Programming.  The event was held to display not only the stepping abilities of the students, but also to show the deep African roots of stepping.  An estimated 200 people attended the performance.

Now the NPHC is hard at work focusing on intake and preparing for Step Show on November 9.
