Outdoor kitchens are a growing trend in Atlanta—and it’s no wonder.

We have a great climate, we love to cook and entertain, and we enjoy the outdoors as an extension of our homes. Kitchen design principles are the same whether inside or out. The cook should reach all the appliances easily, the guests should flow smoothly, the eating area should be near the serving station, and so on.

Unlike your indoor kitchen, however, the “floor” may be rolling terrain, the “ceiling” is the sky, and the mood changes with the seasons and the sun. You’ll need to address issues such as drainage, shelter, privacy, and uniting the kitchen seamlessly with your yard. The key to any outdoor space is careful planning early in the process. An Outdoor Expressions landscape architect can work with you at every step—from design to completion—to ensure your project meets your goals and budget.

Here are more planning tips: for nighttime dining, provide concentrated task lighting and soft table lighting; consider planting vegetables and herbs near the prep area; and choose appliance finishes less likely to corrode in the elements. Call us to find out more!

Bring vibrance to your shade garden with ‘Lemon Daddy’™ hydrangea. Lemon-yellow foliage makes a gorgeous statement, not to mention the added beauty of its summer blooming season.

This brilliant hydrangea grows quickly
and is a great choice for Georgia heat and humidity.

Exposure: Partial shade
Average Height x Width: 4' x 4'
Hardiness Zones: 5–9
Water Needs: Keep moist until established

- apply preemergent weed control to Bermuda or zoysia lawns.

- replenish mulch in plant beds to help retain moisture. October is one of the driest months of the year!

- change out tired old annual flower beds. Plant hardy annuals like snapdragon, pansy, and viola now through November. Get creative and use your imagination... there are no rules! Consider Russian kale, ornamental cabbage, or variegated yucca for a splash of color.

- give trees and shrubs a rest! Pruning or fertilizing them may force tender growth that’s vulnerable to the first hard freezes.

- replace plants that didn’t make it through the recent drought. “Fall is for planting!”
