Dr. Thomas Shepherd President, Ross University |
President's Message
It is with pleasure that this issue recognizes two
of our alumni for the enormous impact they are having in their chosen fields across the country. They are not only working to “give
back” to society, but are also fulfilling their dreams in the process. And these stories are duplicated throughout North America and the world
by many of our alumni. I also want to recognize the continued community involvement of our current students. Your involvement adds immeasurable value
to the Ross community, and I am proud of your efforts.
Elsewhere in this newsletter you will find an
article highlighting Ross University’s commitment to working in conjunction with local governments to support specific research efforts.
Another article emphasizes Ross University’s involvement in discussing ways to establish relationship-centered care initiatives with leaders in
medical education from across the country at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
We look forward to our upcoming graduation ceremony, which is being
held for the first time at Madison Square Garden’s WaMu Theater in New York City, on June 6th. This is a testament to our growth as we have
outgrown our former venue, Lincoln Center. The keynote speaker for the School of Medicine graduation will be
Alvin Tarlov, M.D. Dr. Tarlov is a professor of medicine and former chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of
Chicago. Prior to that, he was a professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Texas, and the Sid Richardson and Taylor and Robert H.
Ray Senior Fellow in Health Policy at the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy at Rice University. He served in numerous capacities during
the past several decades, influencing medical education and manpower needs, and has received many awards for his service. For the School of Veterinary
Medicine graduation the keynote speaker will be Steve Dale, a nationally known pet expert whose newspaper columns and radio programs reach millions of
pet lovers across the country each week. Of note, we will once again graduate our largest combined classes in Ross University
history.
My advice to those graduating is to please remember to enjoy this
day of celebration. We wish you happiness, health, and success in the many years to follow.

Rob Teti, DVM—Class of 2000
Animal Sanctuary Founded by Ross University Grad Provides
Refuge for Troubled Teens
In 2003, Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine
graduate Dr. Rob Teti realized his dream of opening an animal rescue and youth assistance sanctuary in Avondale, Pennsylvania.
Chenoa Manor is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization
which serves as a safe haven for more than 200 animals. The sanctuary also provides positive interaction between the animals and at-risk
teenagers. According to Dr. Teti, “If a young person can develop a relationship with an animal based upon mutual trust, patience, and
understanding, then those same qualities may be carried over to the teen’s relationships with other individuals.”

Book Written by Ross Dean Now
Translated Into Japanese
Co-written by Dr. Guy St. Jean, assistant dean and professor of large animal surgery, the second edition of Bovine Surgery and Lameness has now been translated into Japanese.
As those who have conducted bovine
surgery can attest, it is both challenging and complex. Not only does the surgeon have to decide
whether such surgery is economically justified, but the surgery often has to be performed in less than optimal surroundings.
This newest translation of Bovine Surgery and Lameness Second
Edition is greatly needed because there are so few such textbooks written in languages other than
English, according to Dr. St. Jean. Of note, the book was previously translated into Spanish.

Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine Helps Quell Fears
Surrounding Mysterious Fish Deaths
Representatives of Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine recently
collaborated with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) laboratory at the University of British Columbia to help calm fears surrounding some
mysterious fish deaths that were first reported by the St. Kitts Department of Fisheries in January.
Research conducted by the Ross team—which included Dean of Research
Dr. Tammi Krecek, Veterinary Pathologist Dr. Natalie Keirstead, Bacteriologist Dr. Keith Lander, and Technical Research Associate John
Brake—and the CDC laboratory confirmed that the fish in question were infected with Streptococcus iniae (S. Iniae), a
zoonotic bacteria that has been known to cause sickness in humans.

Ross University Helping to Alleviate Looming Shortage of Primary Care
Physicians
Testifying recently before the United States Senate Health, Education, Labor and
Pensions Committee, Bruce Steinwald, healthcare director of the Government Accountability Office (GAO), warned of a looming shortage of primary care
physicians that is only being alleviated by graduates of international medical schools like Ross University School of Medicine.
According to Steinwald, from 1995-2006, the number of primary care residents in
the U.S. rose six percent, an increase that is solely attributable to graduates of foreign medical schools. Without them, there has been a seven
percent drop in the number of U.S. medical school graduates entering primary care.
