NEWSLETTER & WEBSITE UPDATE-
Your input is wanted!
Many of you have complimented the changes we've made to our newsletter. Now it's time to offer your
ideas on how to improve the look of our website.
The website and newsletter have both been a labor of love for dedicated APLD volunteers Jessy Berg, Li Vellinga, and Maureen Decombe. Jessy put in
countless hours creating and upgrading the website and newsletter. Then Maureen took the newsletter to the next level with help from the design team
at Emma, a newsletter mailing and formatting service.
Now Kelly Bowman Greenwood, Li Vellinga, and Maureen Decombe have teamed up with Unifusion, a website
design company, to unveil our new & improved website early in 2007, and we want to hear your ideas as we enter into the design process. Your input is
always welcome, but to have your suggestions considered for the current design round, please email your ideas to Maureen Decombe no later than December 1, 2006.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we have made these upgrades and changes. We
are thrilled that you like the newsletter, and hope that you will be pleased with the exciting plans we have for the website!

APLD California Chapter Newsletter
Peninsula Mentoring Program Continues to Grow
-by Kathy Kane
The Fall session of the Peninsula District Mentoring Program is well underway with 13 mentor/mentee matches involving 22 APLD members. The
program was started in 2005 for the purpose of pairing more experienced designers with newer designers to share experience, advice and
encouragement. Through four sessions over the two years of the program, more than 40 people have participated. That's almost half the
members in the Peninsula District!
So what are mentees and mentors meeting about? Every meeting is unique to the learning or coaching needs of the mentee. Some members have
asked their mentor to review one of their drawings or advise on an issue with a particular site. Others have sought coaching on how to work
with
a challenging client, update their portfolios, or grow their business. A meeting might take place at either the mentee or mentor's studio, at a
client site (what better way to learn the best way of measuring a site - especially those with tricky curving spaces or a change in elevation?), or
over coffee or lunch.
If you've been thinking about signing up for the program, a new session will begin early next year. Anyone in the Peninsula District can sign
up regardless of years of experience. Designers with just a few years of experience are great matches with student members while members with 8
or 10 years experience will be great matches with designers who have been in business for 5 or 6 years. Assignments are easy; it's only a
3-meeting commitment over 4 or 5 months. And it's a great way to build new friendships, grow your skills - either as a 'teacher' or a 'student'
and to help our APLD district grow in professionalism, talent, and membership.
For more information on the program, contact Kathy Kane (kathy@kkane.com) or our Mentor
Committee Chair, Jeanine Gerstenfeld
(garden_visions@yahoo.com)

LATC Fines Garden Designers
-by Laurie Callaway
Enforcement actions have recently been taken against two individuals who were found to be in violation of the Landscape Architects Practice
Act. Neither of these individuals are APLD members.
BPC Section 5640 states that a non-licensed practitioner cannot submit construction drawings. The citations read as follows: "Submitted construction
drawings for a
residential project $500 fine."

Unusual Supply Source
-by Rolf Jacobs
I recently visited a source of landscape materials unlike anything I have ever seen. The company is called the New Life Millworks and is part
of Green Waste Recycle Yard. Their website is www.greenwasterecycleyard.com and phone number is 1-510-376-9994.
What this company does is urban logging. They take trees that have been cut down in urban areas and mill the logs into useful products. What we
as landscapers can find here are logs of any size. They have logs small enough for kids to use as stools, all the way up to enormous whole
trees. They can make them into rustic chairs or benches of any size. They have 4" air-dried slabs up to 4' wide and 20' long in many
different kinds of wood. As a long-time woodworker, I can attest that these are almost impossible to find, but here you can choose from six or
eight different species. Custom cut dimensional lumber is available, as well and hand-hewn beams salvaged from old barns are also for
sale.
The uses of these materials are limited only by your imagination.
We should support companies like this. Every product they sell is something that otherwise would have gone into a landfill. Their yard is in
Richmond and just a few minutes off of 580 via the Richmond Parkway exit. Call for directions. Getting there the first time is tricky but
you'll find it if you follow their directions and watch carefully for their signs.

Garden Conservancy Seeks Well Designed Gardens for the Open Days
Program
-by Peggy Hinman
The garden should be at least one year old, and in the geographic area between San Carlos and Los Altos Hills. We try to cluster gardens on one
weekend day, in April or May, to make it easier for visitors. There will be a $5 entrance fee for each garden of which the owner can donate 50% to
charity of choice. The gardens will be listed in a regional and national Open Days directory. Please contact me if interested.
Awards & Recognition
Redwood City Mayor's Beautification Awards
Marcia Bloom, APLD, won one of the 2006 Redwood City Mayor's Beautification Awards for "Best Use of Small Garden Space". She designed a
low-maintenance front and backyard landscape for her client. The lawn-free garden features a geometric courtyard with a cubed fountain that echoes
the patterns in the hardscape. To see photos of the garden, please visit her website at www.inbloomgardendesign.com.
