SOMETHING EXCITING IS HAPPENING AT BET HAVERIM THE
WEEKEND OF MARCH 7th - 9th!
As you may remember, at the annual meeting last
year, we began talking about hiring a part time cantor or rabbi, both to add new musical dimension to CBH and to allow our rabbi to cut back a bit on
his time (we don't want to burn him out!). Our committee has been working diligently since then, reading resumes, interviewing people, and listening
to some beautiful music. We have chosen a candidate to come to our synagogue, so that we can get to know him and see if he is a fit with Rabbi Greg
and with our congregation. His name is Cantor Brian Reich and he has been a cantor for over 20 years. We hope you will come this weekend to at least
one of the events below and then let us know what you think! Get Details Below >>

Putting “U” in The Center of Community
On Sunday, April 13th, all of us deserve to join together to “kvell” (the
uniquely Yiddish word meaning to “beam with pride and pleasure”) about our community and our many successes. Together we have
created a dynamic and vibrant center for Jewish life here in Yolo County, offering a wide variety of educational, spiritual and cultural
opportunities to learn and grow. Lord knows there are plenty of chances to “kvetch” (also a uniquely Jewish word meaning to
“moan and complain.”), but how often do we take the time to celebrate who we are and what we have achieved? How often can we
gather with all of our friends in our community just to have a good time, to visit and reconnect? When was the last time you danced and played
carnival games when your children weren’t around? All this and more will be featured at this year’s amazing “Kvell in the
Country.”
This special event is about YOU. We are nothing without you! We can
exist only because of you, for you stand at the center of community. So, in truth, it is you we are celebrating. That is why it is so
important for everyone--from all parts of our congregation--to come together to “kvell.” Each one of you is a sacred part of the
greater whole. It is this wonderful bond that we share with one another that is the focal point of our “Kvell in the Country”
event.
Let us come together this April to kvell: to rejoice in our accomplishments, to celebrate you,
the fabulous individuals who make our community the special place that it is, and to build toward the future. We hope you will be there because
our community wouldn’t be the same without you!
Blessings,
Rabbi Greg

Be happy - it's the month of Adar, and Purim will soon be
here!
Here are a few pre-Purim thoughts: Why didn't Queen Esther receive
Mordechai's email warning her about Haman's plans for the Jews? Because she had an
Achashvirus.
Jewish Vocabulary: TORAHFIED: Inability to remember one's lines at one's Bar or Bat mitzvah MATZILATION: Smashing a piece of
matzo to bits while trying to butter it.
MISHPOCHAMARKS The assorted lipstick and make-up stains found

one says when the cream cheese squeezes out of the bagel and falls on your clean clothes.
Jewish Existentialism: Walk on air, but not against the traffic
lights. And a few famous movie quotes, in Yiddish:

Israel@60 brought Noam Harel, the Israeli Emissary at the Jewish Federation in Sacramento, to our Sunday
school. Noam (his Hebrew name means pleasantness, comfort) presented “The Case of Israel” to our 6th and 7th graders, focusing on the
importance of Israel to all Jews and exploring the meaning of Israel to each student, personally. A few students shared disturbing incidents they
have experienced at school just because they are Jewish. They made us all proud by telling how they stood up for themselves and ultimately, for
the Jewish people, and all people.
Battle of the Books engaged 15 students from grades 5, 6 and 7 competing
on their knowledge of four Jewish books. Participants each read between one to four books, formed three teams named after three tribes of Israel:
Levi, Asher and Judah. Levi won the Battle and will enjoy a group trip to “Six flags”. The rest of the Israelites received gift
certificates to Ben & Jerry. However, the reward is so much greater since, as we say many times, the journey is far more important than the
destination. These students learned about Jewish heroes & values, history, identity & dilemmas through their readings. They extended and enriched
their Sunday school education beyond its limited time and moreover, shared the books and their contents with their parents. I’m extremely
proud of them. Whooping thanks to Dea Diamant who orchestrated the battle, from choosing
books to writing questions, to soliciting prizes and to running the final event. A good idea became a treasured experience for our students
because of your commitment. Thanks Dea!

Keshet News
Meeting world fixers continued for our 8th & 9th graders
until the end of January. Sarah Jaffe and Yonah and Matt Biers-Ariel were followed by our CBH member Stuart Bresnick and Julie Helmus. Stuart shared
the goals and achievements of Yolo Habitat for Humanity as well as his personal experiences and rewards working with and for this organization. Our
students were inspired and we’ll reconnect with Stuart when they reach the age – in just a few years. Julie Helmus, communication
associate for “Freedom from Hunger” concluded our series. Her lively and engaging presentation, with the aid of a UCD intern, took our
students to far away places where this organization uses funds and local resources to educate people, especially women, so they can better provide for their families. Our presenters opened our eyes in so many ways: We saw the outside world that
needs so much repair, we had the opportunity to appreciate how fortunate we are, and we were empowered to be fixers. Thanks to all our guests for
volunteering their time to teach the students of Keshet High. Keshet started the month of February with a new round of electives. Due to high
student interest, we decided to continue offering “Ethical Debate” and “Women, Sex and other Funny Text”. A new option
this semester is “Israel Experience” which is filled with immersion into Israeli life: Culture, food, teens in Israel and
more. Parents, if you have any concerns, comments, suggestions, etc. regarding Keshet High, please don’t hesitate to contact me (Malka
Sansani) at school@bethaverim.org

Attention
DNJJYites!
Our January events were successful!
Everyone who attended had a lot of fun. I want to congratulate our new DNJJY board. The officers are Max Brumer –President, Sean Winograd-
Programming Vice President, Benjy Egel- Membership Vice President, and Dana Wilk – Communications Vice President. Once again I wish to extend
to them my congratulations along with my faith that they will strive to perform the duties of their positions. Our FIRST EVER OVERNIGHT EVENT was
a HUGE success. We had 20 DNJJYites stay the night with us. Throughout the night we talked, ate food and watched movies; additionally we started our
night and our week with a beautiful Havdalah service and studied a passage from the Pirke Avos (Teachings of our Fathers). The event was a great
milestone for our youth group and now we have to set our goals even higher. On February 24 DNJJY went
to Yogurt Shack to hang out, nosh on some frozen yogurt, and get to know each other. I look forward to more great attendance at
Rocknasium. Upcoming Events: March 23 Rocknasium Please fill out and return to the office your DNJJY membership forms - teens will not be
allowed to participate if their emergency forms are not on file. If you have any questions about events or the youth group please feel free to
email me (Louis Sachs) at cbhyouth@yahoo.com

At the February CBH Board Meeting, MK
announced that the search for a part-time bookkeeper is under way, and that she is beginning to work on the 2008-09 budget. Joy Cohan,
treasurer, said that our new mortgage agreement has been signed. She gave a detailed explanation of how to read the monthly statement and our
updated financial Pro Forma. The new program committee is being formed. Until they are ready to begin assessing proposed programs the
executive board will evaluate the programs according to the new policy. The Board of Directors will be sponsoring the Israel at 60 program and has
delegated that committee to continue their work. The entire CBH community is welcome to take part in the weekend
festivities. The E-Tone Survey indicated that most of the congregants like the electronic newsletter. It will continue, with hard copies
available on request. Future issues will contain helpful hints so that readers can get more out of the e-tone. Daphna explained the Youth Task
Force report, which has recommendations for teen programs and space needed. Esther announced that five seats will be available for the board next
year. Ann Teal, Board Secretary

Watercolors and Poetry in Two
VoicesSunday, March 2, 3 - 5 p.m., CBH Social
Hall
A presentation of cutting edge watercolor paintings by Joseph
Finkleman and two-voice poetry written and performed by Joseph and Susan Finkleman.
In his series Stories from the Bible That Have Never Been
Told, Joseph explores the boundaries between form and not form, using the rich content of the Torah, the Talmud, the Zohar and the
Midrash.. In their two-voice poetry, Joseph and Susan explore truth from a variety of paradigms while taking that special form of
conversation between familiars to a new level. It's poetry, it's drama, it's improvisation with the spoken word, it's
unique.
Plans for a follow-up poetry workshop will be
discussed.

COME OUT AND KVELL, Y'ALL!
COME OUT AND KVELL,
Y'ALL!
A Short Note from the Fundraising Chair:
Hello CBH families:
Shortly, if not already, each of you should
be receiving your Kvell in the Country invitation in the mail. In the spirit of the Yiddish word kvell "to beam with pride and joy" - I
want to share a few thoughts about our committee¹s hopes and visions for the event. We are making every effort to build an evening that
will be attended and enjoyed by many many CBH families. After surpassing our goals for generating Blue Ribbon Sponsors (we have 29!) and out of a
desire to make the event as accessible as possible, we have reduced the price to $72 per person. And, as always, if that price presents a barrier to
your attendance, please let us know. Arrangements are in place to ensure that the event will be as inclusive as possible. All of the major pieces
now are in place: we have a wonderful facility, delicious food, outstanding live music and dancing, an exciting live and silent auction, a full bar
and good ol¹ carnival games. Rather than being designed for a specific few, this event has been organized to include all, to please all and to
celebrate us all. Our
ultimate message is that if you belong to CBH, WE WANT YOU AT KVELL! Please feel free to contact me if you have any
questions!
In community,
Mark Simon, msimon@omsoft.com
The Kvell in the Country auction already includes an impressive selection of restaurant gift
certificates, spa packages, a quilt by our own Diane Moore, original paintings by Melissa Chandon and Peter London, vacation
homes & more! Chances are that you can help the Kvell auction in ways you've never imagined:
a. You might donate a craft or art item that you've
made, or offer a service, whether cooking a dinner, baking treats, tutoring Hebrew or giving massages.
b. Perhaps you could take someone fishing or lead a day
hike. You know your talents...we hope you will be willing to share them!
c. Maybe you have a piece of art or furniture in your home that
you once treasured, but no longer really want? Now is the perfect time to put it up for auction.
d. Do you have a vacation home that you'd be willing to share
for a weekend? Also welcome are gift certificates, entertainment and sporting event tickets or specialized
services.
Your generosity, no matter how creative or how large or how small, will help to sustain our
community financially for the coming year. Ready to donate? Questions? Contact Judy Dresher, auction chair, at (530) 756-8239 or judith.dresher@gmail.com.
Israel Matters is excited to announce that Israeli Consul General David Akov will speak in our

Tamar, a graphic and industrial designer, and they have three children – Shira, Ido and Eliyah. This presentation will be open to the public.
A brief question and answer session will follow Consul General Akov's presentation.
The CBH Library is available for use. It has
been organized with call numbers and there is a database listing the cataloged books. A list of books and other materials from that database
will be available online. Come in and browse and borrow books as you need to. If you have other library/information needs or interests
please let the Library committee know by writing to kenfirestein@yahoo.com . Books may be borrowed for one month and access to the library is
whenever the office is open. How to borrow books and other information is posted in the library.
ISRAEL@
60 CBH is planning a special series of events on May 2-4 to honor and learn from
the 60th anniversary of the creation of Israel as an independent state. That weekend, which includes our annual Yom Ha-Atzmaut (Israel Independence
Day) celebration, will feature several programs led by a visiting educator from Melitz, an independent, nonprofit organization in Israel that fosters
strong connections between Israel and Jews elsewhere.

audiences during the weekend. She is a native of London, England, who made aliyah five years ago. An experienced Jewish educator even
before moving to Israel, Alexandra has a Masters degree in Jewish Studies from University College, London. As a licensed tour guide she
has worked with groups from all over the world on short trips and long-term programs in Israel. In the United States. she has worked with all
age groups and denominations, bringing high level Israel and Jewish education into schools, synagogues, Hillels, and other institutions.
