clubGEN Skate Party Reaches Over 300 Girls

To celebrate the success of clubGEN over this past year, GENaustin threw a Skate Party for clubGEN girls and their friends on the evening of May 1st.  Over 300 girls enjoyed an evening of prizes and skate lessons from the Texas Roller Girls at the Playland Skate Center.  GENaustin's Executive Director, Julia Cuba, stated that, "The number of girls who attended is indicative of our success at recruitment for clubGEN this year.  We served over 850 girls through clubGEN in 17 AISD middle schools.  We wanted to give the girls a great way to celebrate their sisterhood." The evening was a huge success thanks to our amazing volunteers and sponsors!

GENaustin's New Development Director

We are pleased to welcome our new Development Director, Jessica O'Mary.  Jessica recently graduated form the LBJ School of Public Policy specializing in Nonprofit and Philanthropic Studies. Before coming to GENaustin, she worked at the KDK Harman Foundation. She also has consulting experience in nonprofit management, such as fundraising and strategic planning. Jessica also worked at The Charles A. Dana Center, an education policy research center at UT-Austin. Jessica looks forward to building the capacity of GENaustin through fund development.

Former clubGEN Facilitator Continues GENaustin Experience

Hannah Platt, a former clubGEN facilitator at Bowie High School in 2004/2005, is once again working with GENaustin this time as a summer intern.  A junior at Austin College in Sherman TX, Hannah is studying pyschology and sociology with a focus on adolescent girls and self esteem.  According to Hannah, "I remember my time as a clubGEN facilitator fondly and I wanted to come back to be a part of this great cause once again!"  We are lucky to have her back on board!

Volunteer Spotlight

We would like to recognize two outstanding mentors whose dedication helped to make clubGEN so successful.

McKinzey Crossland, a mentor at O. Henry continually provided support to her team of facilitators, while maintaining the right balance between letting the girls lead and providing guidance here and there.  According to Campus Coordinator, Laurie Fox, "McKinzey definitely has a natural ability with the girls".

Similarly, Ana Lopez, a mentor at Kealing, demonstrated incredible dedication to her team by attending every club and planning session throughout the year, always going above and beyond to help her team meet the needs of their middle school girls.

We thank these women for their commitment to helping empower adolescent girls!
