Tagetes

The Potting Shed-Plant of the Week

Tagetes lemmonii – Copper Canyon Daisy

Tagetes lemmonii is a bushy evergreen shrub that grows about 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide. A strong fragrance from the finely divided foliage is released when the plant is rubbed or brushed against. Golden-yellow flowers appear spring through winter cover and the plant.  Copper Canyon Daisy likes full sun or part shade and is drought tolerant, but looks best with a little irrigation during the hottest summer months. This plant comes from Arizona south into Mexico and is also known as Mountain Marigold, The scent of this plant is likened to the scent of marigold mixed with lemon and mint. One gallon plants are available this weekend in The Potting Shed.

Fullerton Arboretum Offers “Scouting for Wagons” Program For Local Scout Troops

The Fullerton Arboretum is pleased to announce a new program to meet service project needs for local scout troops.  “Scouting for Wagons” promotes Daisies, Brownies, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts to provide a valuable community service for the Fullerton Arboretum.

The “Scouting for Wagons” program encourages scouts of all ages to collect used wagons in good condition, paint them green and then decorate them to reflect their troop number, motto or service project title.  Through our Volunteer Office, troop leaders may arrange to deliver the completed projects and a photo to be taken of the troop and their donated wagons.  Photos will be featured on the Fullerton Arboretum website as well as local media outlets.

Donated decorated wagons will be used by Arboretum patrons while visiting the garden for plant sales and other garden events. For more information and to arrange for a “Scouting for Wagons” assignment, please contact Harriet Bouldin, Volunteer Coordinator at 714-278-4798 or hbouldin@fullerton.edu.

Heritage House Decorated for the Holidays

Heritage House has recently been decorated in Victorian style for the holidays.  Drop by and bring your out-of-town guest on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon for an interesting and informative "blast to the past" over the holidays.

Heritage House is open for tours for the general public on Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.  The interpretive tours by costumed docents generally take 20-30 minutes and explain 19th Century life and medical practice in Orange County. Stop by and visit this historical museum the next time you come to the Arboretum. More information here.

Nature Center Now Open Weekends

The Nature Center is now open weekends. Stop by and visit us if you are touring the Arboretum--we have water and cold drinks plus snacks for sale. Also--we have many interesting educational items on display for children and adults to enjoy and learn about nature. We are generally open from about 10:00 am to 4:00 pm all weekends.

The Nature Center is the place where Arboretum guests may pick up information regarding upcoming events, classes for children and adults, Heritage House, the museum, facility rentals and other general information. Maps of the gardens are available to help first-time visitors find their way through the 4 major collections in the gardens. Friendly volunteers are happy to provide directions to particular points of interest.

Also available in the Nature Center you will find a beautifully filmed and narrated DVD tour of the Arboretum that could make an excellent gift or addition to your personal library, reasonably priced at $10 per copy. You can view a copy of this DVD for free during your visit.

As a special treat, the Nature Center sells cold drinks, snacks and ice-cold giant popsicles plus fudgsicles. Stop by and see us during your next visit.
