Davis Downtown

The DDBA General Meeting will take place this Wednesday, February 7, 8:15 - 9:45 a.m. at Steve's Place Pizza, 314 F Street.  Coffee and pastries will be served.  All DDBA members and the public are welcome.

Please join us for a presentation of the findings of the DDBA RestructuringTask Force at the General Meeting and be a part of building a newly invigorated DDBA that will champion our downtown.

The task force has held nine meetings, and re-examined image goals for the downtown and the DDBA's role.  The discussions, between representatives from retail, restaurant, service, professionals, and property owners, have focused on supporting a common vision for the future of the downtown.

The annual election of board members will also take place at this meeting.

For further information, please call Laura at the DDBA office, 756-8763, or Maria Ogrydziak, Task Force chair, 756-2346.

Brown Bag Lunch - This month's informal "Brown Bag" lunch, presented by DDBA's Business Development Committee, will be held on Wednesday, February 28, noon - 1 p.m. at the courtyard (if the weather is pleasant) or conference room at Harrington Place, 430 D Street.

Our guest this month is Davis City Councilperson Stephen Sousa.

Please bring your lunch or purchase one at one of downtown's 70+ places to eat. The luncheon is open to the public and attendees are invited to ask questions of the councilperson Sousa in a casual setting.  It is not necessary to RSVP to attend.

For more information, please call Laura Cole-Rowe at the DDBA office, 756-8763.

Don't Forget - The AMGEN Tour of California is scheduled to go through downtown Davis on Tuesday, February 20.

The AMGEN Tour of California is a professional bicycle stage race. The world's top professional teams will compete over an eight-day, 700-mile race on a route that includes the California redwoods, wine country and the Pacific Coast.

Approximately 128 professional riders are expected to participate in this year's event.  It is also expected that different stages of the race will be well attended by spectators, as towns similar to Davis reported a surge of visitors from last year's race.  The tour is approved and will be accompanied by the California Highway Patrol.

The tour riders will enter Davis on Russell Boulevard and will swing through downtown (B Street, to Second Street, F Street to Covell Boulevard).  The tour then heads north on Pole Line Road to I-5 where it will follow the river into Sacramento and Capitol Park.

The route is tentatively scheduled to go through downtown Davis between 1:52 and 2:20 p.m. (based on average speeds).

The race will only take about eleven minutes to ride through town.  Adding CHP, tour, bike team, and media vehicles before and following behind the racers, the entire impact on any one intersection that day should be no more than 15 minutes.  The Davis Police Department will work with the tour organizers to minimize traffic stoppages and to create detours around the temporary race barricades.

A special "in-tour" sprint is planned for Second Street downtown.  For safety, the Tour organizers have asked that "No Parking" signs be placed on both sides of Second Street and two blocks of F Street for Tuesday, February 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  The rest of the route will not require the removal of parked cars.  Volunteers will be utilized to post no parking signs at least 24 hours prior to the Tour's arrival in town.

Davis volunteers and Amgen tour coordinators will assist the Davis Police Department as course marshals when the race reaches Davis. The media will be notified of suggested places to watch the racers.  These locations will include Central Park, Second Street and F Street downtown.  Special signage will be prepared to direct visitors to Davis to suggested parking locations such as the 4th and G Streets garage.

This is a great opportunity for downtown retailers and restaurants to promote their business before, during and after this well-attended internationally known event! This event received very positive press last year and is highly regarded in the cycling community.

USE THIS EVENT TO YOUR ADVANTAGE!  Join us in promoting this event and let us know what you are doing for specials and promotions the day of the event - send to ddba@davis.com  and we will post it to the Davis Downtown Web site - http://www.davisdowntown.com .
