Governor Schweitzer's State of the State: 'Montana is open for business'

Last night, Governor Schweitzer touted Montana's booming economy, potential for clean energy development, and  tax rebates for homeowners that are Montana residents in his second State of the State address.

Since he became Governor, Schweitzer announced that Montana has gained more than 24,000 new jobs –  an increase of 1,000 jobs per month. With our 2.8% unemployment rate, more Montanans working than anytime in history, and wages in Montana are increasing at the 3rd fastest rate in the nation. More.

Baucus Responds to the State of the Union:

Calls for Working Together on Health Care, Energy, and Iraq

“With one in five Montanans without health insurance, we have a big problem on our hands," said Sen. Baucus. "To get off the ground, [the President's] proposals need to do two things: provide new health coverage to people who have none, and better coverage to those who don’t have enough."

Baucus also welcomed President Bush’s statements on the need for America to be more energy independent, and that he respectfully disagrees with President Bush’s proposal to send more troops into Iraq, saying American troops have performed admirably but that it’s time to start bringing them home.

“The people of Montana deserve real leadership to tackle the challenges--from soaring property taxes on the middle class to investing in public education--and a health care crisis that leaves too many Montana families vulnerable. Democrats in the Legislature have rolled up their sleeves and set about the work of improving the lives of Montana families,” said Senate President Mike Cooney. More.
