Laura Schaub demonstrates her preferred work posture

Peninsula Design Salon Highlights

By Karen Hunt

A dozen designers descended on Laura Schaub's home last Wednesday to chat, share ideas, eat tasty snacks, and spend some quality time with the Schaub felines.  The conversation was wide-ranging - from proposal-writing and the importance of good client communication, to the pros and cons of working with plant brokers vs. sourcing plants ourselves.

VectorWorks was a key hands-on activity, as Laura showed how she uses it and some of the cool things it does.  They also talked about different kinds of printers and how nice it is to be able to print in your home office.

A few of the take-home ideas included:

  • The importance of tailoring your proposed work product to your own particular strengths;
  • What services to offer your clients and how to describe them accurately, so that everyone has the same expectations of what you are to deliver;
  • That if you can afford it, a good printer/plotter will pay for itself in convenience alone; and
  • How to handle getting busy and in demand (i.e., queuing clients and staying in sufficient communication throughout the waiting period).

In summing it up, Laura reflected that "it was a really nice way to bring people together in a new way, and I will definitely do it again."

The 4th Annual Bay-Friendly Garden Tour will take place on Sunday, April 29th 2007, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, showcasing Natural Gardening Techniques.

Visit a wide assortment of Bay-Friendly Gardens on this FREE, self-guided tour. Over forty public and private gardens will be featured throughout Alameda County, including an entirely new crop of gardens!  Several of the garden clusters are within walking or biking distance.

This years' tour continues to celebrate the diverse styles of Bay-Friendly gardens. Bay-Friendly Gardens offer something for everyone--come and discover ideas for creating your perfect retreat.

Registration for the tour is required. Registrants will receive a tour guide book with garden directions and descriptions by mail. Native plants, vegetable starts and Mediterranean perennials can be purchased at select sites on the tour.

Want to be more involved?

Lawrence Grodeska

Volunteers are needed for the day of the Bay-Friendly Garden Tour. In just a 3.5 hour shift, volunteers will help the host gardeners by greeting guests, distributing information and answering questions. We will do our best to match volunteers to the gardens and/or location of their choice.

Volunteers will meet other gardeners and receive Bay-Friendly Gardening cotton t-shirt, an advanced copy of the tour book, and garden gifts while furthering the goals of Bay-Friendly Gardening--encouraging the use of ecological gardening practices in order to conserve local resources and protect the Bay.

For more information or to register for a volunteer slot, please visit our website http://recycle.stopwaste.org/gardentour/gtvolunteer.asp

You can also contact Lawrence Grodeska: lgrodeska@stopwaste.org or (510) 614-1699.
