We are excitedly planning for the silver anniversary of this remarkable event
that honors breast cancer survivors and their families, friends, and supporters.
The 25th Anniversary Y-ME Luncheon & Fashion Show promises to be the most
amazing yet don't miss it!

Breast cancer survivors are invited to take advantage of a new program: Y-ME Wellness Spa. Participants are treated to a manicure, facial, haircut, wig styling or scalp treatment.
Priority is given to recently diagnosed patients, but all breast cancer survivors
are invited to participate.

Sharon Rose Wig & Prosthesis Salon
Did you know that Y-ME Illinois offers wigs & breast prosthetics, as well
as other breast cancer-related accessories, free of charge, to patients with limited financial resources? Our salon is named in honor
of the late Sharon Rose Miller, a founding board member of the Illinois Affiliate.
Sharon worked tirelessly in her efforts to help all those facing breast cancer,
even while facing her own personal battle with the disease. Sharon impacted and
inspired so many and we are honored to offer this wonderful service under the
name of someone who was so dedicated to fulfilling Y-ME's mission to ensure that no one faces breast cancer alone.

Y-ME Receives Grant to Offer Daylong Seminar in Spring 2005
Y-ME Illinois recently received a grant from the Illinois Department of Public
Health, Office of Women's Health to plan and implement a daylong seminar dedicated
to breast cancer issues in the African-American community. We are looking for
individuals interested in sitting on our planning committee. The first planning
meeting will be held on Monday, January 17th at 5:30pm in our office at 203 N.
Wabash, Ste. 1220.

Focus Group Opportunity for Breast Cancer Survivors
Thursday, Jan. 13th

Schlesinger Associates, a national market research company, is conducting a 45-minute
research discussion group regarding the management of breast cancer. They are
seeking women who have taken/are taking Femara/Letrozole, ages 18-71, who were
diagnosed at Stage 1-3, and who have/had no metastasis. Participants in the study will be compensated $125 cash for their time and opinions. Free parking is available. This is not for sales purposes, it is strictly for research.

IlliNOISY Advocacy Teleconference Training
Have you ever felt nervous about contacting your elected officials? Have you
ever wondered what its like to work in a congressional office? Join us for a
look into the daily life of Health Legislative Assistants (a.k.a. Health LAs)
working on Capitol Hill. The Health LAs (who work on legislation relating to
breast cancer) for both Rep. Judy Biggert and Rep. Jan Schakowskys offices will
join us via phone from D.C. to share their experiences, give tips on how to be
most effective when contacting your elected officials, and they will also answer YOUR questions!

The National Tour of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical kicks off a U.S.
tour in Chicago. The story follows the odyssey of two unlikely friends in the
Land of Oz (long before Dorothy and Toto set foot): the fiery Wicked Witch of
the West and the popular Glinda the Good Witch. Tickets are $125 and the seats
are great! This event is a fun way to help Y-ME Illinois continue to provide
essential services for those facing breast cancer and $39 of each ticket is tax
deductible.

Benefits and Risks of Tamoxifen are Similar in African American & White Women
African American and white women with breast cancer have the same risks of getting
cancer in the other breast while on the drug Tamoxifen, according to a study by
scientists at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes
of Health. The benefits of Tamoxifen, including protection against cancer in the
second breast (contralateral breast cancer), have been demonstrated in previous
studies whose subjects were predominantly white. Read more.
Small Variations in Genes Can Determine Risk of Developing Breast Cancer
A woman's risk of developing breast cancer is due in part to a group of very
small variations in genes which code for a cell's estrogen receptors, according
to a collaborative study by scientists at the National Cancer Institute (NCI),
part of the National Institutes of Health, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center,
Celera Diagnostics, SAIC-Frederick Inc., Applied Biosystems, the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology and Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. The study
appears in the December 15, 2004, issue of Cancer Research. Read more.
New Test May Help to Avoid Breast Cancer Chemotherapy
Much of the trauma of breast cancer is in the treatments used to attack the disease
and, despite those increasingly effective treatments, the fear that the cancer
will recur and metastasize. Read more.
Breast Cancer Drug Shows Better Result in Study
A class of hormone-blocking drugs called aromatase inhibitors was more effective
in preventing breast cancer recurrence in women past menopause than was tamoxifen,
a medication now prescribed by many doctors, researchers reported. Read more.
Breast Implants Don't Hurt Survival of Mastectomy Patients
The long-term survival of breast cancer patients is not reduced when they receive
breast reconstruction with implants after mastectomy. Read more.
Breast Cancer Diagnosis May Not Affect Job
Contrary to some beliefs, women who return to work after being diagnosed with
breast cancer are not typically demoted or otherwise discriminated against in
the workplace, new study findings show. Read more.
