The Blessing of Partners: Cantor Brian Comes to
CBH
God saw that Adam was all by himself in the
Garden of Eden and decided: Lo tov hey’ote ha’adam l’vado [It is not good for a person to be alone] (Genesis 2:18),
and created for Adam the very first partner, an ezer k’negdo, a power to match his own.
In the earliest chapters of the Torah, we are
given this insight into what it means to be a human being. We see that we are not meant to live our lives in isolation, independent
operators. We are to form connections, relationships and partnerships that will sustain us and give our lives meaning. Whether we are
choosing life partners or creating career opportunities, having someone to collaborate with is key to sustaining our success and overall well-being in
life. A partnership creates sparks of possibility, a synergy of ideas so that new opportunities can emerge. This is the very essence of our
human nature.
I have been so fortunate to have experienced
an abundance of blessings when it comes to partners at Bet Haverim! So many in the congregation have stepped forward to make our congregational
dreams come true. Whether it was the quest for a new Torah, a new and inspiring home for our congregation, establishing a Jewish preschool, or
developing an incredible variety of programs, I have been overwhelmed by the dedication, creativity and passion of each you
who have given so generously of yourselves.

Each of you has played an amazing role in guiding the flowering of our synagogue community at
Bet Haverim. I have been blessed with an opportunity to also work with stellar leaders, on the Board and on various committees, in the
congregation who’s vision and spirit is unsurpassed by leaders in any congregation of any size. In particular, I am grateful to Esther
Novak who will be completing her fourth (and final) year as our congregational president. Esther’s partnership with me was always infused
with such commitment and care as she shepherded our congregation through these exciting and challenging years of transition. It has been a great
privilege to work with her. Malka, too, has been a partner who has enriched my experience at the congregation with her warmth and love for
our students and her desire to bring them all closer to Judaism. We now stand poised to celebrate another significant milestone in our
journey together as a congregation as we welcome the newest addition to our synagogue family, Cantor Brian Reich. Cantor Reich brings a rich
family background in the cantorate and over 25 years serving as a cantor himself. I know that he will add so much to our community with
his uplifting music, sweet soul, passion for Judaism and caring nature. But most exciting for me is that I will have another dynamic partner to
share with me the sacred task of leading our beautiful congregation into the future.
What began as a dream of mine almost three years ago has now become a reality. In order to support, guide, and
sustain the tremendous programs that we have developed and the people that lead them, I realized that we needed additional professional
leadership. I approached the Board and have been so grateful for their continued support and confidence in this project. With a trained
cantor, we will also have the expertise to continue to deepen the music and prayer life of our synagogue, in collaboration with the other talented
music people in the congregation. We hope to engage you in becoming partners with us as we build towards the future. A very special thanks
to the search committee, under the leadership of Candace Naliboff, who did an outstanding job overseeing this process.
Another significant piece of my dream for this project has been the opportunity that it will afford me to create a more
balanced life for myself and my family. Cantor Brian, who will begin in July, and I will both be working about 2/3 time during the year.
[Brian will generally work Tuesdays and Wednesdays and I will work Wednesdays and Thursdays. I will work the first two Friday/Saturdays of the
month and he will work the second and third. We will split the Fridays and Saturdays of the 4th and 5th Shabbats. I will be participating
in all of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebrations during the first year, even if I am not scheduled for that Shabbat.] This new framework will allow me
to pursue spiritual goals that have been lying dormant and will allow me to spend more, extremely precious, time with my family (who have been
exceedingly patient with my schedule and endless nighttime meetings over the years). All of which will infuse me, as a rabbi, with new energy
and ideas to share with you, my partners.
This new step is a major transition for all of us and will require all of us partners to work closely
together. Please know that I am more committed than ever to working with all of you to create a loving Jewish community here that nurtures
our souls and inspires our hearts and challenges our minds in fresh and engaging ways. I hope that you are as excited as I am about these new
possibilities. I am confident that everyone will reach out to Cantor Brian to help him quickly integrate into our hamish community and feel at
home here. It is not good for any of us to feel alone and I look forward to working with all of you.

Torah Notes for June Available on CBH Web Site You can find the notes from this
month's upcoming Torah readings online at: http://www.bethaverim.org/rabbi_landing.html#torah.
NOTE: All Friday evening services in July will be at 6 PM. July 4th will be a combined Tot
Shabbat/Family Service, also at 6 PM. |

What an unexpected, vigorous and remarkable journey - after eight years as a board member and
four years as president, I am looking forward to returning to life as a CBH civilian. About these last years, I would say to everyone
considering synagogue leadership, that if someone as unlikely as I could end up doing this, so can you! Although it certainly includes a lot of
work, and sometimes tsuris, serving the synagogue in this way is also enormously rewarding - to have an opportunity to give and make a difference for
our Jewish community. Many times in this column, I've thanked people for their work, speaking on behalf of the congregation.
In this last column, I'd like to thank some people, speaking from my own heart. During these years, I've
worked closely with our rabbi, Greg Wolfe, whose intelligence, compassion and commitment to Bet Haverim have
made that work a pleasure. I thank him, along with extra thanks for all the puns he's provided. I've also worked closely with two
incredible executive directors, Kristy Donohoue and MK Menard - my thanks to them for all the work, help and
fun they have given me. Thank you to our office manager, Marti Martin, who's always had a cheery greeting and a ready offer of assistance.
Thank you to every CBH member who's said "yes" when asked to do something big or small for the
congregation. Thank you to all of the hard-working board members with whom I've served. Thank you to Candace Naliboff and Jeff Steele, for
agreeing to take on new tasks whenever asked, and for offering me good counsel. Thank you to my diligent
executive committee colleagues Steve Cohen, Elliot Landes, Joan Sublett, Ann Teal, and Richard Zeiger. Thank you to co-vice presidents Karen Firestein and Hallie Morrow, who've given me peace of mind, knowing they'll lead CBH well in the new
synagogue year. My most special thank you to Joy Cohan, who, as board member, co-president and
treasurer, has been my comrade through the events of Bet Haverim's first four years in its new home, with the successes, growing pains, and
celebrations. And thank you very much to my husband John Chendo, for all his support and
behind-the-scenes volunteer work. It has been quite a ride. Now, it's the next leaders' turn to deal with broken air conditioners, leaking
gutters, programming issues, budgets and meeting agendas. Please help them every way you can! See you in
shul.

We rejoiced with Israel. On Sunday morning May 4, our children embraced Israel with all their
senses. Hundreds of blue and white Israeli flags draped the redwood trees, flowed stretched out over our earth-tone buildings and welcomed everyone as they entered the sun-filled campus. Our students mingled with children of young Israeli families (whose
parents are here for study purposes) and were engaged together in a variety of enlightening, interactive programs.
The day culminated with a spectacular, inspiring Finale Ceremony abundant with Ruach and love. Thank you for your role in our educational
achievements.
To our teachers and madrichim - every week, through the teaching of Hebrew and at Sunday school, you have created a niche that helps connect our children to generations past
and future. You supply the tools needed so our students are able to embrace and sustain a life of living Jewishly. We
appreciate your dedication and commitment to advancing the teachings of our Torah. You have provided the building blocks that serve as the foundation
for a true Jewish experience. My heartfelt thanks to all of you.
My gratitude to the many who served as room parents, lent many hands to a successful Purim Carnival
and a meaningful Mitzvah Day and substituted in our classrooms, or joined them as helpers. Thanks to Stacey Souza for
assisting in the school office, to Dawn Furie for coordinating the challah fetching and to Dan Tennenbaum for sweetening our Sunday morning &
Friday evening family services with great music. We appreciate Pearl Carpenter for warmly sharing her love of Jewish
stories with our youngsters and Carrie Shepard for gracefully teaching Israeli dancing to 3-4 grades. A
whopping thanks to MK and to Marti for their assistance and teamwork, and to Enrique for always making our learning spaces and outdoors ready for us.
I am ever-grateful to the religious school committee for their support, partnership, guidance and hard work above and
beyond our scheduled meetings.
Our 2007-2008 religious school year was an amazing time of learning, exploring and living Judaism:
We celebrated Israel’s 60th birthday with year-long “Israel in a Bag” art projects and an
extraordinary Independence Day celebration. We rejoiced with Jewish holidays and actively participated in Friday night services. We extended the
learning into the home through intriguing family programs, and ten of our students participated in “Oh,
Jonah” an enchanting performance with children from DUMC. We inspired the CBH community to join us in Mitzvah Day and collected tzdakah to donate to people in need. The “Battle of the Books” event afforded our students opportunities to read books
on Jewish topics, then to "battle” on them in lively and contemplative verbal exchanges. We effectively
proffered our excellent programs because teachers, madrichim, Rabbi, RSC and so many of you cared! Todah Rabah!
Congratulations Graduates! Mazel Tov to the 7th grade class for completing our Sunday school program. I hope that the
knowledge and the experiences, the friendships and the sense of community you have acquired in Sunday school will
continually empower you as Jewish people. I am looking forward to your participation in our Keshet High program, THE place to be on Wednesday nights!
And to our Dalet Hebrew graduates: Hebrew, the holy language of the Torah and the
everyday language in Israel, is now yours. Retain it and you are off to a unique Bar/Bat mitzvah preparation and meaningful worship experiences. Yshar
Ko’ach!

Keshet
With a tremendous sense of accomplishment we ended our first year of Keshet. We sustained attendance and offered a
variety of programs that gave our teens social opportunities as well as academic challenges. We learned from four
“Social Justice Heroes” who shared their tikkun olam projects with our students; we celebrated Hanukkah with DRTY; gathered in the
social hall for a chocolate seder and participated in a Yom Hashoah memorial in Sacramento. Many thanks to our
amazing teaching staff Rabbi Wolfe, Evan Mayse, Louis Sachs and Sam Blumberg for their knowledge, teaching skills and rapport with our students.
Gratitude to Maki Kubey for coordinating snacks and to the Egel family, Deborah Conard and Stan Young for
driving our teens to Sacramento. And to all of you parents, thanks for supporting Keshet with your feedback and helping your children pursue involvement in our program. Keshet will have an orientation night on August 24th and will start the new year on September
14th.
L’Itraot (see you) and have a relaxing, fun-filled summer. We’ll meet again in the fall.

May has been a busy month for DNJJY packed full with events. We enjoyed a delicious Shabbat Dinner at Hillel and bowling
at the Memorial Union. With the weather being so hot I can’t wait until our Pool Party on June 1. I want to
wish everyone a great summer and say thank you for all your participation and hard work that has made DNJJY as great as it is. Its going to be a long
summer, but I can’t wait until the Fall when everyone comes back from vacations and summer camp so we can
start our exciting Fall calendar. For all 8th graders going on to 9th graders make sure to check out DRTY and see all the great things it has to
offer you. DRTY represented our teens in the “Salute to Israel” event in Sacramento offering children an opportunity to use puff
paints to make Israeli freezbees. Thank you Jessica and Shira for being there. DRTY also joined DNJJY for an Israeli
themed Shabbat at Hillel and had a fun a fun lounge night at Bet Haverim on May 20. If you have any questions about events or the youth group please
email me at cbhyouth@yahoo.com. Questions regarding DRTY may also go to Jessica, DRTY President, at

Al Sokolow and his Israel @ 60 committee members were commended for their work on that celebration weekend. Joan Sublett, Joy Cohan and Mark Simon were recognized for their work on the first Leadership group, which recently completed that
program. Board members Mark Simon, Nancy Lazarus and Joy Cohan, along with Judy Dresher who all worked on the Kvell fundraiser were also thanked. Net income was over $15,800. Malka Sansani reported on the Keshet and Youth programs, which were both successful
during this year.
The Board of CBH reviewed the budget for 2008-09 and recommended this be presented to the congregation at the annual meeting for their approval.

We are happy to announce that Cantor Brian Reich plans to begin working with Congregation Bet Haverim on July 1,
2008, in partnership with our Rabbi Greg Wolfe!
The Rabbi/Cantor Search Committee began its important task of finding a partner for our wonderful rabbi in July,
2007 and its members were David Aladjem, Annette Fineberg, Esther Novak, Jane Rabin, Meryl Rappaport, Rabbi Greg Wolfe and Candace Naliboff, Chair.
The committee started with approximately 15 resumes and letters of interest from a variety of people - educators, cantors, and rabbis from various
training backgrounds. The committee paper screened all of those applicants, and went forward with telephone and then in-person interviews with a
number of them. After the interviews, there were several that the committee was interested in inviting to Bet Haverim for the weekend. Two decided to
drop out at that point, and Cantor Brian Reich was invited to our synagogue for one weekend, giving him the opportunity to lead services, teach,
and meet with committees and congregants. He returned for a second weekend to lead services on his own, so that people could get to know him better.
After receiving an overwhelming number of positive evaluations of Cantor Brian, and checking references that were also very positive, the
committee recommended to the Board, and the Board voted unanimously, that he be offered a two year employment agreement, July 1, 2008 through June 30,
2010.
We look forward to welcoming Cantor Brian to our Bet Haverim family. He will be spending some time at CBH
on Tuesdays in June, in preparation for his starting in July.

Many thanks to the Progressive Dinner 2008 hosts and volunteers. The organizers of the
Progressive Dinner, one of Bet Haverim’s most popular events, have many people to thank for its continued success. Thank you, first, to all those who attended! We had 96 people participate in the progressive dinner. Special
thank-yous go to the hosts, without whom this event would not be possible: For hosting appetizers - Jerry Adler and Marjory Tolbert, Helen and Jerome Suran, and Sylvia, Bernard and Judy Dresher and Ben Orlove; For hosting dinner-Linda and
Stuart Bresnick, Karen and Eric Crane, Lyra Halprin and Alan Jackson (for hosting at the last minute), Jon and
Dea Diamant (and she made a dessert, too!), Peggy and Manny Epstein, Dahlia, Dan and Malca Haberman, Cheri and Ron Herman, David Siegel and Nancy
Lazarus, Larry and Norma Rappaport, and Fern Tablin and Arnie Wolf. In addition, we would like to thank those
who helped behind-the-scenes, imparting their knowledge from years past: Barbara Fox Juchau, Nancy Lazarus, and Norma Rappaport. We would like to thank Janice Purnell for advice on decorating the social hall on a shoe-string budget and Dave Block for
choosing wines (within budget) for the appetizer houses and helping to deliver dinners all over Davis.
We would also like to thank the Rabbi for leading a warm and inviting havdalah service after dessert. A big
thank you also goes to the youth helpers who all did a wonderful job: Ella Haberman, Hannah Jolkovsky, Rachel Berliner and friend, David Conard, and Michael, Katelin, Samantha, Courtney, Richard, and Amanda (Jessica’s friends).
Please let us know if we’ve forgotten anyone! We owe a major thank you to Jessica Greenstreet (without
her quick phone action, there would not have been any youth helpers). And, of course, thank you to Marti and MK for their help with inquiries,
checks, labels, etc. This event would not be the success that it is without all of you. Thanks again to everyone! Karen Block and
Linda Steele

Men’s Sacred Circle Forming at Bet Haverim
We all know of the deep longing and hunger that men share for more meaningful ways to talk
with one other. To this end, building on our Jewish tribal ancestors, a new project will convene at Congregation Bet Haverim, to create a sacred
community circle, to listen, to welcome our younger men with their fresh perspective, to listen and support men in transition (leaving for college,
retirement, endings, etc.), and witness and honor our elders. To build community! The opportunity to sit with older and younger men, to hear their
musings of their lives’ journey, can offer an inter-generational perspective, and hopefully a way to feel less alone, which many men carry in
such stoic ways. Men are invited to gather, and build this sacred community circle, as we extend ourselves, in broadening, exploring and deepening our
sense of what we want from our personal community. Many men have not considered options or choices in what community can offer. So this experience
will likely be new to many. This will not be a men’s group, as one might envision. Instead, the large community circle will seek to have each
month, at least 35 men; the more the better. This design, affords men the ability to drop-in, from one month to the next, to bring a friend, and there
is no commitment to be a regular. Men will discover, from being with one another, that the circle is a rich resource, a space to ponder deeply the
unique qualities we share, as the circle invites the soul, the shadow, the healings and the connections to resonate. This new monthly experience of
sitting in a community circle, with other good men, yields wisdom, as it invites the heart to speak and to be heard. Our hope is to build a forum for
reflection! When a man speaks his truth, there is both safety and power in being witnessed. The circle will serve as a container, inviting
meaningfulness, statements of honesty, and declarations of intent in a sacred space. Being together, men become important, as each man discovers his
unique voice, his own vision, on his own journey. We will be posting additional information for this Community Circle Project, later this summer. Open
to all men of CBH and their friends, (younger men need be at least 18 years or older). Mark your calendar: Start date: Thursday, September 18th
2008. Planning Committee: Rabbi Wolfe, Gregory Guss, Ken Firestein |

From DNA to Genetic Genealogy
Genealogy guru Steve Morse, creator of the one-step approach to database searching, will debut a new talk in June-- “From DNA to Genetic Genealogy -- Everything You Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to
Ask.” Members of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Sacramento and interested guests will hear the first
presentation of Morse's new subject. According to Morse, the study of genetics that started with Gregor Mendel's pea experiments in 1865 has now
entered the genealogy field with the coining of the term "genetealogy" in 2000. To understand the genealogical
aspects requires an understanding of some of the basic concepts. This talk introduces genes, chromosomes and DNA, and goes on to show how DNA is inherited. That knowledge of inheritance can be used for finding relatives you didn't know you had, learning
about your very distant ancestors and the route they traveled, and determining if you are a Jewish high priest
(Kohan). All are welcome to attend on Monday, June 16 at 7 p.m. at the Albert Einstein Residence Center, 1935 Wright St., Sacramento. For more
information about the Jewish Genealogical Society of Sacramento, visit www.jgss.org, e-mail the JGSS at
