SEMINAR ON FREE TREATMENT FOR BREAST CANCER

No woman with breast cancer should be denied treatment...regardless of her insurance
situation. And in Pennsylvania there is free treatment available for uninsured or underinsured women. Unfortunately, many
healthcare providers and women diagnosed with breast cancer are unaware of the free treatment.
The PBCC is traveling the state with exciting
regional seminars designed to spread the word about the free treatment program and to provide expertise on how to access the program. The most
recent seminar was in Wilkes-Barre with the support of BlueCross of Northeastern Pennsylvania and the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute. We
plan to replicate the seminar in all regions of the state throughout this year and next.
If you would like information on hosting, attending or
providing financial support for one of these seminars, please contact Heather at heather@pabreastcancer.org or 800-377-8828 x 102.
For details about the free treatment program,

CONGRESS PASSES GENETIC INFORMATION NON-DISCRIMINATION ACT (GINA) The First Civil Rights Act Passed by
the Congress in Almost 20 Years
|
Congress
recently passed legislation to prohibit health insurers and employers from discriminating against individuals based on their genetic information -
which includes those individuals found to have the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene. The Genetic Information Non-Discrimination Act overwhelmingly passed
both the House and Senate, and the President said he would sign the bill. When the bill becomes law, it is expected that more people will take
advantage of genetic testing and participate in genetic research without the fear of employment or insurance discrimination based on the test
findings. This law opens doors for those who have a family history of breast cancer to get tested to determine whether their genes put them at a
higher risk - a potentially life-saving determination. For more information, please check out the summer issue of Frontline™, the PBCC's
print newsletter - due out in mid-June!
The PBCC supported the passage of GINA, and we want to congratulate Sharon Terry, president of the
Coalition for Genetic Fairness and CEO of Genetic Alliance for this important legislative victory.
