Metro IAF To Work With Bronx & Upper Manhattan Charter Schools
Beginning this month, public charter schools in the Bronx and Upper Manhattan will have an
opportunity to work with the Metro Industrial Areas Foundation (Metro IAF), one of the largest networks of community-based organizations in the
country. Metro IAF is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that prides itself on identifying, training and developing leaders in every corner of
every community.
Metro IAF is partnering with the Center to help interested charter schools identify leaders in their school
community (parents, staff, potential community allies and others) to create a base of leaders and grassroots institutions that will support, promote
and defend charters schools in New York City. Initial organizing efforts will likely be local in scope and focus on neighborhood and borough
issues. As efforts progress and more well-trained and experienced leaders emerge, the organization will tackle broader city and state-wide policy
issues.
In Metro IAF the Center believes it has found an organization with the requisite experience and capacity to lead
school-based advocacy efforts and provide strategies and resources to assist schools in broadening their base of support. For more information on
Metro IAF visit their Web site: http://www.industrialareasfoundation.org/.
Metro IAF will contact charter school leaders in the Bronx and Upper Manhattan to schedule introductory meetings.
As charter schools in other parts of the city express interest the Center will consider expanding the effort to Brooklyn and
Queens.
Please contact Jeff Maclin if you have any questions.

REMINDER! Grant Opportunity From the Center The
Center is inviting all charter schools to apply for a $1,000 grant that will be used for a fun activity for school staff and or students in 2008.
Please submit one paragraph that describes your activity or project, targeted participants and associated costs. This is a one-time grant
opportunity. Please submit your entry in digital version no later than Tuesday, January 15, 2008 to Nadine Patterson. The Center will select the winner by random lottery and make the
announcement on March 15, 2008. Good Luck!
EDITOR'S NOTE: New security measures in place at 111 Broadway now require photo identification
for anyone wishing to enter the building. This policy is strictly enforced; there are no exceptions. If you are attending meetings at the Center
please carry the proper identification. We appreciate your cooperation.
