Independence Card News
Happy New Year!

It's time (well, almost) to start thinking about purchasing your 2008 Independence Card. I'm working on finalizing the new card and the program details. I want to incorporate your feedback to make this year's card as useful as possible.

Meanwhile, since I've been a bit tardy, 2007 card holders have a "reprieve" on their cards' expiration. Until the new 2008 card is ready (by mid-January, I hope), we'll still be stamping your old cards. So, if you have a card with a few empty squares, here's your chance to fill them! All purchases in 2008 will transfer to the new card and any card that is close to being full will also transfer.

If you're unfamiliar with the I-card, think of it as a way to "pay-it-forward." When you purchase your I-card, you're contributing to a fund we use to help maintain an eclectic inventory. Your card gets stamped as you make purchases, and a full card earns you a nice discount (plus another empty card so you can start collecting more stamps).

You can ask any of us in the store for more information. If you've been a 2007 I-carder, thank you and please join us again when our new program is announced next week. If you're new, we hope we can welcome you aboard.

In the meanwhile, please send us (groots@peak.org) any ideas you would like us to consider for 2008. (Unfortunately, our most frequent request — that we keep the cards on file — can't be done because of liability issues.)

Sincerely,
Jack

In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto

Michael Pollan

"Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." These simple words are the guiding principles of Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food, in which he provides thoughtful answers to the questions he posed in his bestselling The Omnivore's Dilemma. Pollan suggests that if we would pay more for better, well-grown food, we'd benefit ourselves, our communities, and the environment. Examining what science knows about the links between nutrition and health, he proposes a new way to think about our diet that is informed by ecology and tradition.

Memo to the President Elect: How We Can Restore America's Reputation and Leadership

Madeleine Albright

Albright begins by stating that, after eight years of mismanagement under George W. Bush, the presidency will be at an all–time low and will need to be quickly rebuilt. In Memo to the President Elect, she offers a persuasive, wide–ranging set of recommendations to the winner of the 2008 Presidential election. Using her experience as an adviser to two presidents and as a key figure in four presidential transitions, Secretary Albright addresses the major world conflicts that will be paramount over the next four years.

People of the Book

Geraldine Brooks

This new novel by Pulitzer Prize winner (March, 2006) Geraldine Brooks tells the story of a priceless illuminated Jewish manuscript as it survives centuries of war and intolerance. Hanna Heath, an Australian rare-book expert, is offered the job of a lifetime: analysis and conservation of the famed Sarajevo Haggadah, which has been rescued from Serb shelling during the Bosnian war. Through her eyes, we unlock the book's mysteries. Inspired by a true story, People of the Book is at a novel of sweeping historical grandeur and intimate emotional intensity.

The Painter of Battles

Arturo Perez-Reverte

Arturo Pérez-Reverte earned a reputation as a master of the literary thriller with his international bestsellers The Club Dumas and The Queen of the South. Now, in this haunting new work, he has written a tale of love, war, art, and revenge. Andrés Faulques, a retired war photographer and painter, receives a visit from an angry stranger who claims to have been a subject of one of his photos. The visit causes Faulques to revisit his past, and the narrative becomes an examination of fate, and of the nature of human love, art, and cruelty.

Freedom for the Thought That We Hate: A Biography of the First Amendment

Anthony Lewis

Americans are free to say and write what they think due to just fourteen words in our constitution: the free expression clauses of the First Amendment. Lewis is an expert on the First Amendment and the author of the classic Gideon's Trumpet. Here, he explains how these rights were created, revealing a story of hard choices, heroic (and some less heroic) judges, and fascinating and eccentric defendants who forced the legal system to come face-to-face with one of America's great founding ideas.

Letter to a Christian Nation

Sam Harris

This brief (112-page) book by philosopher and neuroscientist Sam Harris directly challenges the religious certainties of the Christian Right. Citing polls and doctrines, the author of The End of Faith vigorously attacks literalist dogmas that he believes are a direct threat to our future. For those who are concerned by this country’s growing unification of church and state and its decreasing support for the sciences, this little book is a wonderful source of ideas.

The Not So Big Life: Making Room for What Really Matters

Sarah Susanka

In her groundbreaking bestseller The Not So Big House, Sarah Susanka showed us a new way to inhabit our houses by creating homes that were better — not bigger. Now, in The Not So Big Life, she shows us that it is possible to take our finger off the fast-forward button without giving up the things we love. Through simple exercises and inspiring stories, Susanka shows us how small shifts in our daily routines can open our minds and let in fresh ideas.

The Innocent Man: Murder and Injustice in a Small Town

John Grisham

John Grisham's first work of nonfiction, an exploration of small town justice gone terribly awry, is his best legal thriller yet. It focuses on the tragedy of Ron Williamson, a baseball hero from Oklahoma who winds up a Major League washout railroaded onto death row for a hometown rape and murder he did not commit. If you believe that in America you are innocent until proven guilty, this book will shock you. If you believe in the death penalty, this book will disturb you.

You Suck: A Love Story

Christopher Moore

When Thomas C. Flood awakens after a fantastic night unlike anything he's ever experienced, he discovers that his girlfriend Jody is a vampire – and now he's one, too. But Tommy and Jody are in love, and they vow to work through their "issues." You Suck is a funny, raunchy slapstick comedy.

American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on American

Christopher Hedges

Twenty-five years ago, when radio and televangelists first spoke of the United States becoming a Christian nation, it was hard to take their hyperbolic rhetoric seriously. Today, according to the author, such language poses a very real threat to our freedom and our way of life. In American Fascists, Hedges, a veteran journalist and National Book Award finalist, challenges the Christian Right's religious legitimacy and argues that it is a mass movement fueled by unbridled nationalism and opposition to an open society.
