Kappa Delta celebrates friendship, gives back to community

National Women’s Friendship Day event supports Rape Recovery Center

Murfreesboro, Tenn. – Members of the MTSU chapter of Kappa Delta sorority recently celebrated National Women’s Friendship Day by assisting women in need in Rutherford County.

National Women’s Friendship Day is a holiday created by Kappa Delta in 1999 to celebrate women’s friendships. It is observed the third Sunday in September, so Kappa Delta chapters across the nation celebrated the event this past Sunday, Sept. 17.

This year the MTSU chapter decided to partner the holiday with a community service event supporting the Rape Recovery and Prevention Center in Rutherford County.  MTSU Kappa Delta members collected over 400 teddy bears and travel-sized toiletries for the RRAPC, which will be used for Hospital Accompaniment Services, a program that aims to comfort hospitalized sexual assault victims.

“I have so many special women in my life that I am thankful for and this holiday allows me to celebrate these friendships,” said Grace Schettler, vice president of public relations for the MTSU Kappa Delta chapter.  “What better way to celebrate each other than to give back to women in our community who are in need.”

The collection drive and subsequent cookout for members were held at the home of Grace Schettler, Catherine Fowlkes and Katherine Henson in Murfreesboro.

National Women’s Friendship Day is an annual holiday and each Kappa Delta chapter around the nation chooses the way in which it is celebrated locally.  For more information about the holiday, please visit www.kappadelta.org.

David Stollman will Deliver "Buy In or Get Out" on Thursday, September 28 at 7:00 p.m. in the JUB Tennessee Room.

“Buy In or Get Out” Will Challenge and Inspire

National Hazing Prevention Week at MTSU kicks off next week and culminates with the Greek Speak Out on Thursday, September 28 at 7:00 p.m. in the JUB Tennessee Room.  At the Speak Out, nationally recognized Greek life expert Dave Stollman will present his renowned program “Buy In or Get Out.”

Too often good leaders and good chapters are not able to succeed because they are too busy cleaning up after the ones that don't get it.  Fixing their problems or fighting their negative image?  Imagine how much more we could accomplish if they were part of the solution instead of part of the problem.

Well...drag them, push them, fine them, beg them, or dare them to attend this keynote presentation by David Stollman.  David will say what you wish you could.  Let him confront them in his funny, interactive, and moving style.

His message will inspire those that want to care about the core values of Greek life - friendship, service, leadership, and scholarship.  He will challenge your members to embrace the best and get ride of the rest.  It will touch on topics that range across all major issues facing Greek life.

Meet the Greek Life Staff

The Office of Greek Life launched a new slogan this past summer that challenges students to "Be Something More." We want students who want to get something out of their college experience. Greek Life is fortunate to have four individuals who have chosen to be something more and work as staff in Greek Life.

Ashley DeSabetino, a Murfreesboro native, serves as the editor of the Greek Life newsletter this semester. She is a political science major but is receiving class credit for her work through her service learning internship for an English minor. Ashley is a member of Alpha Omicron Pi, an SGA senator, serves on the Greek Life task force, and is a member of the student involvement and leadership advisory committee.

Returning to the office this semester is Ashton Myrick, who serves as the Greek life student worker. Ashton began working in the office during the fall 2005 semester. She divides her time between three jobs, accounting and finance classes, and visiting her family in Hendersonville, TN. Ashton is a very dedicated individual and Greek Life is fortunate to have her as support staff.

Jeanne Jodoin is completing an internship in the office this semester towards requirements for her leadership studies minor. She is a microbiology, management and marketing major from Madison, AL. and serves as the Panhellenic delegate for Delta Zeta, Rho Lambda president, greek life task force member, and Executive Director for Up til Dawn.

Our last staff member is Marissa Miller from Antioch, TN. She is completing an internship in the office towards her major in Organizational communication. Marissa is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, involved with the mentoring program through the Multicultural affairs office, and serves as the chair of the 2006 NPHC Step Show.

These individuals are very dedicated people. In addition to their accomplishments, you can find them working on projects such as Greek Camp, calendar updates, contact information, Greek Leadership retreat, and other various tasks.
