"The Beauty of Firsts"
A "first" can be an extraordinary thing. For Asatou, it was her first time on an airplane, elevated
30,000 feet into the air. For Ian, it was a test of his
ability to survive two weeks without his
iPod. But most importantly, for eleven BwB members and three advisors from New York and Connecticut, this summer's Trek for Knowledge to Mali represented
an opportunity to
do a most novel thing: to help a community halfway across the world build a school and improve their lives. Read

Lead Members Experience Unique Summer Trips
This summer, Lead Team members from New York and Connecticut enjoyed trips where they
combined community service with education and leadership training. One group of girls headed to Girls Quest in the Catskills Mountains to help
prepare the
camp for visitors while also participating in team building and educational exercises. Read about the Girls Quest trip here.
Meanwhile, on the Long Island Sound off the Connecticut Shore, fifteen Lead members embarked on a five-day trip with Soundwaters. Read about the
Soundwaters trip here.

NY's Global Impact Awards
Congratulations to the winners of the NY Regional Global Impact Awards. Diana
Ryan, a student at Marble Hill School for International Studies, was rewarded for her enthusiastic
participation in BwB, including being part of the Lead program and traveling to Mali on a Trek for Knowledge (click here to read her

Ms. Zarah Vinola, BwB Advisor at Truman High School (far right in photo), was recognized for her dedication to her students and
to BwB's mission. As she says,
"My experience with BwB not only influences
my role as an educator, but it enhances my ability to contribute to various global causes."
