Getting Started

By Sara Stenger

I had a chance to meet with my mentor Jeanine.  It was a great experience.  I learned a lot of time saving ideas, as well as some ideas on how to "get more clients".  Jeanine was very helpful and the meeting raised my energy level and gave me momentum to get started.

I also met with another new member, Nicki.  She and I gave each other pep talks and discussed some of our fears, excitement and fears of getting our businesses going.

The meeting at Laura Schaub's house was also very helpful in getting ideas for proposals, making estimates and just seeing how kind and helpful everyone wants to be and is.  It has been a pleasure and a help meeting everyone I have met so far.  Thank you for taking the time to help us new-timers get started.

UC Berkeley Extension Administration is discontinuing the Garden Design Certificate Program

By Laurie Callaway

The University of California at Berkeley Extension administration has announced that it is dropping the Garden Design Certificate Program from its curriculum schedule.  A quote from the March 15, 2007 announcement states, 'It (Garden Design Program) has not been generating adequate revenue for the past several semesters and Extension administration feels it is time to discontinue the program.'

Anyone currently enrolled in the program must have all their course work completed by the Spring Semester of 2008 if they wish to graduate with a Certificate in Garden Design.

The following courses will be offered to enable students with the proper prerequisites to complete the program.  The courses offered will be:

  • Summer 2007: Irrigating the Garden, Designing Garden Structures, Herbaceous Plants and Applications.
  • Fall 2007:  Garden Stairs and Walls, Garden Paths and Patios, Growing a Landscaping Business
  • Spring 2008:  Garden Design and Construction

If you have any questions, please contact Heather Clendenin at hac@unex.berkeley.edu or 415-284-1069.

THANK YOU to Flora Grubb and Sergio Tostado!

By Deanna Glory

And our apologies for not getting our thank you into last month's newsletter.  The APLD booth at the SF Flower and Garden Show would not have been the success it was if not for Flora and Sergio.  Flora Grubb lent us the plant material, the furniture and the pottery.  As most of you probably know, Flora Grubb is opening a new nursery next month.  We can't wait!  To learn more about her great new place, go to http://www.floragrubb.com/index.php.

Sergio and his crew picked up all the material at Grubb Gardens, installed at the show, then tore down and delivered back to Grubb Gardens after the show.  They were quick, efficient and friendly.  Here's a little more info on Sergio:

Sergio Tostado of New Era Landscaping is located in Richmond, California. APLD member Nann White of Redbud Design has worked with him on numerous projects for about five years. He has done projects in the North Bay, the East Bay and in San Francisco. He is very knowledgeable about all hardscape installations including walls, pool coping, patios, arbors, fences, water features etc. He also does planting, lighting and irrigation. His crew is very personable and dependable. He also does maintenance. His number is (415) 720-4985 and email is newera2000@sbcglobal.net.

Save America's Treasures Grant Funds

Alcatraz Historic Gardens Project

By Maria Walton

Thanks to a $250,000 matching grant, a "secret" of Alcatraz will soon blossom. The Alcatraz Historic Gardens Project is the beneficiary of a Save America's Treasures (SAT) grant submitted by the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy in association with the Garden Conservancy. The Alcatraz Historic Gardens Project will restore, preserve and maintain the gardens created by those who lived on the island during its federal prison and military eras. It will also interpret their history, horticulture and cultural significance for visitors. The Garden Conservancy will implement much of the day-to-day work in the gardens, as well as raise matching funds.

Opportunities

Part-time Landscape Design Opportunity

By Jessy Berg

Do you want to put your planting design and CAD skills to use? Are you looking for flexible, part-time work? Peninsula Landscape Designer specializing in customized residential design is looking for designer/drafter working independently from own location. I am looking for someone to take conceptual drawings to working documents and to create planting plans with minimal input. My goal is that I work through the conceptual design with the client, then you take the design to production drawings. This is an iterative process as the plan goes from conceptual to master plan to bid documents.

Who are You?

You are a self-motivated individual who loves the plant design process and knows your way around CAD. You're detail oriented and enjoy the CAD work. You're looking for something part-time, flexible work schedule.

Please contact Jessy Berg and we can discuss more: jessy@bergdesigns.com. www.bergdesigns.com
