Making the Difference: A Blueprint for Matching University Students with Federal Opportunities

In late 2005, the Partnership launched the congressionally-funded Call to Serve Recruitment Initiative, a comprehensive effort to identify cost-effective and sustainable ways to promote federal service in a university setting. The results of this two-year initiative are in, and one conclusion stands out above all others: Cost-effective federal recruiting efforts can make a difference on college campuses. The Partnership’s newly released Making the Difference report highlights key findings from the Initiative and presents a set of recommendations for Congress, federal agencies and schools.

Tufts Offer of Loan Aid Steers Grads to Nonprofits

By Linda K. Wertheimer
Boston Globe

Tufts University is offering graduates an unusual deal: Take a job as a public school teacher or social worker, or work for any nonprofit, and the university will help pay off their college loans for years to come.

While some law and medical schools across the country have offered similar incentive programs, the effort at Tufts, a university that has long promoted public-service careers, is unprecedented. It marks the first time a university has extensively promoted relatively low-paying public service careers to undergraduates seeking bachelor's degrees in all majors.

Tufts graduates will start getting help with loan payments as early as next fall after they have begun jobs in a nonprofit field. Prior graduates in the earmarked careers can also qualify if they are still paying off their college loans.

“Knowing that the federal government is the largest employer in the US and that as the baby boomer generations retires there will be more openings than ever, it's important for our students (and our career center staff) to be more aware of opportunities.  I was also excited by the Partnership's statement of wanting to "revitalize our federal government by inspiring a new generation to serve and by transforming the way government works"  and feel that sentiment will resonate with the Scripps community.”  (Julie Elliott, Director of Career Services)

If you know of any additional colleges, universities or federal agencies that would be interested in joining Call to Serve, have them email calltoserve@ourpublicservice.org or download the application online.

Partnership for Public Service Fellowship Program: Deadline November 16

The Partnership for Public Service is a non-partisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to revitalizing public service through a campaign of educational efforts, policy research, public-private partnerships and legislative advocacy. Through an established internship program - the Partnership Public Service Fellows Program - the Partnership for Public Service offers a unique opportunity for public-service minded students and graduates to gain a new appreciation and understanding of public service.

Fellows are assigned to one of the Partnership’s “teams” (Legislative, Research, Communications, Event Planning, Development/Fundraising, Administrative, Government Transformation and Education and Outreach) based on their skills and interests. During their tenure, fellows are fully integrated within these teams’ projects and meetings. Fellows also have opportunities to interact with and provide general support to all program areas of the Partnership, depending on their individual interests and the organization’s needs.

Fellows are eligible for a monthly stipend while with the Partnership. Although the Partnership accepts applications throughout the year, a review of those submitted for the winter/spring term will begin on November 16, 2008.

Additional information about the program and application process can be found in the attached document or at http://www.ourpublicservice.org/.
