 Greek Awards 2007

Josh McKenzie

This past Wednesday night proved to be an exciting time for the Greek Community, as organizations gathered together to celebrate the past year’s achievements, upholding the four pillars of Greek Life: service, scholarship, leadership, and friendship. As Tucker Theatre became silent, the award ceremony began.

The big achievements of the night can be noted as Alpha Delta Pi, Kappa Alpha Psi, and Alpha Tau Omega winning the President’s Cup, given to the top chapter in each council. Also walking away with prestigious awards were Meagan Flippin as Greek Women of the Year, Chris Smith as Greek Man of the Year, Derria Ford as NPHC Greek Woman of the Year, and Jose Becton has NPHC Greek Man of the Year. Congratulations to all Greek Organizations for their outstanding achievements over the past year. Greek Life at MTSU will continue to make strides during the year to come.

Rho Sigma Roll Call

Whitney Carr

May 2nd will be a bitter sweet day for many sorority women. Rho Sigma Panhellenic Recruitment Counselor Disaffiliation Ceremony, better known as Roll Call will be held on the KUC knoll, Wednesday May 2 at 5pm. Rho Sigma's will be turning over their letters to their presidents and will disaffiliate for the entire summer in order to fully become Panhellenic in their endeavors as a Recruitment Counselor.

This year, there is a new incentive for sorority women to show up and support their sisters. The organization with the highest percentage of women present at Roll Call will “Win a date” with their disaffiliated members. This will be a time for all Rho Sigmas to spend time with their sorority before recruitment starts. This should really turn out the numbers because we all will miss the women who are stepping up to be counselors for the potential new members in the fall.

Come out and support the Rho Sigmas in your chapter, it may be the last time until Bid Day!

The new NPHC President, Justin Phillips

NPHC has New Executive Officers

John Carter

The National Pan-Hellenic Council elected its new executive officers last week.  The winners will take office when school resumes in August.  The results were:

President- Justin Phillips, ΦΒΣ

Vice President- Barret Newsome, ΚΑΨ

Secretary- Christian Armstrong, ΩΨΦ

Treasurer- Lekeisha Hudson, ΖΦΒ

Parliamentarian- Pule Leburu, ΑΦΑ

Current NPHC president Erik Stevenson of ΚΑΨ believes the new group of officers will be highly successful.

“I think they will do a great job of continuing the progress NPHC has made over the last few semesters.  They are all capable of performing above and beyond their required duties, and I have the utmost respect for each of them, both as people and as officers.”

Greek Life Torn on Homecoming Dates

John Carter

For several weeks, a major issue among MTSU Greeks has been Homecoming 2007 and its scheduled date of October 20th.  The Inter-Fraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, and National Pan-Hellenic Council have together voiced opinions against that date and, considering a variety of reasons, requested homecoming be postponed until November 10th. The problems cited by IFC, NPC, and NPHC are:

  • October 20 is less than one month after both IFC and NPC formal recruitment, and does not give those organizations ample time to prepare new members for the time management skills required to complete scholastic work, new member education, and homecoming.
  • Fall Break is scheduled for October 15-16.  Mid-terms have been scheduled for October 17-19.  An October 20 Homecoming is extremely detrimental to the overall scholarship of the Greek community.
  • NPHC Step Show would be scheduled for October 19.  Not only does this place the pressure of Mid-Terms and Step Show on members all at once, it also does not allow members ample time to prepare a quality production.

An October 20th Homecoming forces Greeks to choose between upholding the traditions established over the past decades and scholarship, the reason every student attends MTSU to begin with. As a Greek community, the only option is to forgo tradition and focus on academic success achieved over the past years so a GPA above all-students can be maintained.

Those Clowns are Steppin to Their Own Beat

Josh McKenzie

Phi Beta Sigma's Annual "Steppin' for a Cure was held this past Monday, April 23rd. Five Panhellenic sororities and one fraternity went head-to-head, fighting for the title of Step Show 2007 Champion.

The Greek students participating in their respected organization's step show spent a majority of the spring semester practicing- consisting of long hours of energy-wasting, sweat-dripping, heart-bounding practice sessions.

Monday night witnessed a packed house at Tucker Theatre, everyone anticipating each organization's show. With themes such as Insane Asylum (Alpha Omicron Pi), Pirates (Chi Omega), Shoes (Alpha Chi Omega), Good Clown/Bad Clown (Alpha Delta Pi), and Baseball (Kappa Delta), the show was far from a dissapointment, providing hours of excitement.

With the final points tallied, the ladies of Alpha Delta Pi came-out on top as the winner of the Sorority division and the Best Overall. The men of Pi Kappa Alpha received a first place trophy as the only IFC fraternity participating, while Alpha Chi Omega took home second place in the sorority division.

Sigma Phi Epsilon Hits the YMCA

Andrew Holt

This past Saturday, the men of Sigma Phi Epsilon visited the Murfreesboro YMCA to help with a program referred to as Healthy Kids Day. During the event, the men managed stations that contained different physical activities including soccer football, basketball, and a relay station. A dunking booth was even present for kids to dunk MTSU's very own Sig Ep's.

The men interacted and played with the kids in attendence, bringing out their inner child and having a little fun along the way. The event, which was to promote physical activity among children, was held from 8:30am to noon, with Sig Ep volunteering throughout the entire event.
