Back to School

Join JAHV as we welcome in the new school year and work with schools to set up JA program schedules.

This year, we will be using the theme "On the Wings of a Dream" as we focus on helping kids realize and achieve their potential, encouraging them to dream big and soar to reach for their goals.

Whether you are new to JA or you are a long-time volunteer or JA Alumn, now is the time to help guide kids to make the right decisions, learn the importance of education and staying in school, and learn to take charge of their futures. Get involved as a volunteer classroom mentor or by supporting JA programs in schools. Now is the time help make a difference in children's lives.

Education

September Spotlight: Our Nation
If you're a fan of teaching the 5th grade program Our Nation, you might be interested to know it's been updated, or "re-imagined" if you will.  Taking on a more contemporary focus of entrepreneurship through globalization and industry, the program highlights the importance of STEM skills in today's global economy: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. It helps students see the importance of education and their futures as consumers and workers in a world without borders.

Development

September Spotlight: WIRED Grant

JAHV has partnered with JA of Southwest Connecticut, Inc. (Norwalk) and JA of Western Connecticut, Inc. (Bridgeport) for a federal grant initiative called Workforce Innovations in Regional Economic Development (WIRED) to prepare America's workforce for new and emerging occupations in regional economies. The Port Chester Carver Center and JAHV are joining forces to implement the project in the Hudson Valley area.

Led by trained classroom mentors, students will be participating in the work-readiness based JA Success Skills program to learn the skills needed to be successful in the school, in the workplace and in life. Students identify the skills typically sought after in qualified workplace candidates, and then assess their own skill sets and learn how they can improve upon them.

In addition students will use the JA Student Center and Microsoft's Unlimited Potential Curriculum as resources for career and skill exploration and development. Students will also put it all together through Job Shadowing experiences where they will visit different workplaces and businesses to get a first hand look at careers in action, and how what they are learning is relevant to their futures.

Events

Rockland Road Race
On Sunday, September 7th, JAHV partnered with the Rockland Road Runners for their 20th Anniversary South Nyack 10 Miler. The partnership was organized by Howard Hellman of Allbright Electric, Walter Goldman of Bernstein Global Wealth Management, the JA Rockland Leadership Council, and Kathleen Daly from the Rockland Road Runners. With Title Event Sponsor Provident Bank at the helm, over 400 runners came to compete in the annual event. Part of the proceeds from the event benefit the JA programs in
Rockland County.
