IEP TIP OF THE MONTH It is
not uncommon for children who struggle in school to have emotional difficulties. Red flags may include: withdrawal, extreme mood changes, explosive
anger or hostility, fearfulness, chronic lying, bullying, anxiety, and self-sabotaging behaviors. To wait and hope the emotional distress will go
away is risky. If you have a concern, put in writing a request for an IEP meeting. A referral to Community Mental Health may be an intervention the
IEP Team recommends. Contacting your child’s pediatrician may also be in order.
