Mark your calendars for the weekend of Sept. 15-17 and the Second Annual World
Music Festival, which will bring to Madison an amazing array of extraordinary
artists from the four corners of the Earth, free and open to the public!
Uruguayan polka, spirited Punjabi folk songs, Sufi musicians and dancers and one of Mali
s greatest stars are just some of the many pleasures awaiting the festivals audience. Seu Jorge, the Brazilian musician who performed the songs in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, makes an appearance Thursday night. Come on Friday to catch lively Canadian Celtic step dancing, African Blues, and the Balkan Beat Box which bills itself as a "semi circus event," mixing live and pre-recorded music,
outstanding vocals and an astounding energy to create one of the most dazzling
performances of the festival. On Saturday see a sizzling flamenco hybrid band, native Mesoamerican music, and a unique interpretation of ancient Arab odes.
The festival also showcases dance and music performances by student and community
groups representing some of the many cultures that can be found in
Madison
and
Dane
County. Don't miss it!

Her electrifying stage presence and eclectic musical stylings have drawn the
attention of Sony Music. She is Angelique Kidjo, one of
Africa
s most exciting artists, and she will make you dance at the first World Stage Series event on
Thursday, September 29
at
Born in
Benin
, Kidjo fuses the West African traditions of her childhood with elements of American
R&B, funk and jazz, as well as influences from
Europe
and
Latin America. With three Grammy nominations and collaborations with Santana,
Gilberto Gil and Dave Matthews, she is, without doubt, one of the most versatile
artists today.
Kidjo considered becoming a human rights lawyer, but decided she could reach
more people through music. She serves as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF. I
believe music is a language beyond the color of skin, country or culture, says
Kidjo. I want to inspire people to work to help educate, nourish and protect
our children.
This socially conscientious artist performs songs in English, French, and the
African languages Yoruba and Fon. And she rocks!
