APLD California Chapter
February 2008 Newsletter

Dear Fellow APLD CA Members:

We have had a busy and productive month.  Members from Redding to San Diego are attending district functions.  I was most impressed with a North Bay District function on sustainability where I met many members, potential members and industry specialists.  With the kind of programs and events that are happening all over the state, we will have a great year!

Our first board meeting was very successful and we have committees working to build and develop many programs for our Chapter.  A few of them are:

  • membership
  • 2008 sponsors
  • monthly newsletter
  • website calendar
  • existing district programs
  • new area meetings and programs

2008 looks to be a very interesting year for our industry.  Yes, the weather is wet and wild and many designers are slow for the first time in years.  This could give you time to   1) reconnect with previous clients, 2) canvas a new area, 3) read a design book you have not had time to read, 4) get the office work done you have been putting off, 5) attend an APLD function, 6) get involved with a community volunteer project.

Also there are networking opportunities everywhere and many of us could benefit from using our connections with APLD to start relationship building with industry professionals.  Possibly your local rock yard or nursery does not know about APLD.  Go there and begin a conversation.  Try another.  Each connection could become a great source of leads for you or possibly have the exact pottery or other product your next client will need.  There is a wealth of knowledge and expertise ready for us to tap into.  Enjoy the process and there will be rewards.

Please feel free to contact me with any Chapter questions or concerns.  I look forward to meeting you.

Your 2008 Chapter President,

Colleen Hamilton

Student Clubs Unite
By Jonathan Silverman

We are the future of this landscaping industry. Clearly, both Presidents of organizations enjoy helping our students become more educated. We get them involved to gain valuable learning experiences within our student clubs. Our clubs are great for networking, learning more about the trade, and finding a job once we complete our programs. This awareness with the department now is recognized and supported by all of our faculty.  I am the President of the Hort Club at City College of San Francisco. Julia Pollex is President of Foothill CLCA Hort Club. During the beginning of 2007 my vision developed into a prosperous group of over 30 members, hosting bi-weekly meetings for student interest and involvement. The students range from Environmental and Floristry departments, aspiring landscape designers/architects, gardeners, and possible landscape contractors.

My club I designed has many areas of interest that range from - Speakers Series Events with Key Professionals (CLCA support, APLD support, Flora Grubb's Gardens, Garden Conservancy, and CCSF On-Site Lectures), Field Tours (Strybing Arboretum, Garden for the Environment, and Natural Areas Park Excursions in San Francisco), Student-Led Workshops (Introduce new skills or techniques) Volunteer opportunities (Friends of the Urban Forest, Alcatraz Restoration Project Support, SF School gardening projects.)

By being a volunteer as a landscaper on the historic island of Alcatraz, I can speak to those interested about what it takes. Also being a "Garden Coach" within the San Francisco Unified School District, I can help them transform garden programs with clear work plans from my expertise for general support throughout the process.

Besides our regular Hort Club meetings we are capable to communicate online in a web group page. This has helped us manage our groups' ongoing events to ensure group members are well aware of what's occurring on a weekly basis. We have discussions and share information. Students can connect to one another when not on campus, which is ideal for city college students, since most active members are not at school on a daily basis.

Together we have decided that it was time to re-unite in a mixer event at Sunset Gardens for a tour with Jack Mckinnon, garden coach with a wealth of inspiring experience to offer both groups. This event featured both clubs uniting to share knowledge and to become better acquainted with each other. I called Jack and he agreed to my proposal for a one day tour at Sunset Gardens.

The Sunset Garden Tour was a lot of fun! We had 28 people total, includes both groups. Jack McKinnon gave us a brief history of Sunset before we took a tour of the grounds. Jack has a wonderful personality and he's very open for students to ask him questions regarding the industry or his consulting business. Afterwards some members of the groups exchanged contact info and went to lunch.

Volunteers Sought for San Francisco Flower and Garden Show

By Alison Fleck

Hello Fellow Designers

APLD will once again have a booth at the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show.  The show dates are March 12th through the 16th.  The show is open from 9 AM to 8 PM Wednesday through Saturday and 9 AM to 6 PM on Sunday.  This year the East Bay District is handling the details of building and staffing the booth.  As in previous years we are inviting any interested designers to sign up to work in the booth.  The workdays are split into four three-hour sessions (except the last shift which is only two hours).  We need two people to work in the booth during show hours.  This is a great opportunity to educate the public about APLD and to encourage non-member designers to join. We have enough free passes for each booth volunteer.

If you would like to work in the booth, please sign up for a time slot by sending me your first and second choices.  The slots will be assigned on a first request, first fill basis, so send your preferences in soon.  See below for email address:

The Role of Irrigation Systems in Water Conservation

Sponsored by

East Bay District

Contact

Sharon Gibson, sbgi@att.net

Description

Our February program will feature irrigation specialist Lori Palmquist on the role of irrigation systems in water conservation. Lori is a landscape contractor who specializes in irrigation design, installation, troubleshooting, and repair. She is a certified irrigation contractor, auditor, and water manager. Her specialty and passion is water conservation, and landscape water management. She will help us understand the science and technology of irrigation as it relates to the art of garden design. This skill can bring the designer the confidence needed to handle the follow-up issues of sustaining the health of the garden.

Lori will introduce the latest technology in affordable residential garden water management. She will also demonstrate how to determine and specify the appropriate uses of drip and spray in garden designs, and how to make a rough estimation of the cost of irrigation for design clients. Ample time will be dedicated to answering your questions, so bring them with you.

Well-designed irrigation is an essential and critical landscape component, not only in the responsible use of water, but in the health of a garden over time. A poorly designed system, once it has been installed, is expensive to operate and even more expensive to replace. The client usually ends up spending at least twice as much as they would have, had they had a good system installed to begin with. A well-thought-out and beautifully designed garden deserves a well-designed, efficient irrigation system.
