Rehberg Votes Against Middle-Class Montana College Students

Opposed Largest Student Aid Increase Since World War II

Earlier this month, the Democratic-led House of Representatives passed the largest expansion of college aid since World War II. The legislation will boost student financial aid by $18 billion over the next five years and pay for itself by reducing excessive government subsidies to college loan corporations.  As a special favor to those same big loan corporations, Congressman Rehberg said 'No way'.

Rehberg gave the back of the hand to Montana kids from middle-class families who need help to afford skyrocketing college tuition. He and his Republican pals in Congress sided as usual with Wall Street corporate interests that fund their campaigns. This legislation will bring $48 million in student aid to Montana and will help over 20,000 Montana kids from working families afford college.

If we didn't know it by now, Rehberg has shown again that he doesn't care about Montana's working families who want their kids to get a shot at the American Dream. By voting against the largest student aid increase in sixty years, Rehberg has made clear that he's not for us, in fact he's not even one of us.  As the 22nd wealthiest member of Congress, being able to afford the cost of college tuition just isn't a problem, or his concern in any way.

Tester and Senate Freshman Bring Accountability to Iraq Contracts

Senators introduce legislation to create Commission on Wartime Contracting

Senator Jon Tester wasted no time getting to work on his campaign pledge to restore accountability to Washington D.C. For the first time this year, Senator Jon Tester this week teamed up with eight of his freshman colleagues to introduce sweeping legislation to bring accountability to private contracting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The senators said the measure will save American taxpayers billions of dollars.

The legislation cosponsored by Tester establishes the Commission on Wartime Contracting.  Reminiscent of the WW II-era "Truman Commission", the independent, bipartisan commission will prevent waste, fraud and abuse by overseeing contractors hired to support the U.S. military and to rebuild war-torn countries.

"For too long we've heard horror stories of waste, fraud and abuse by government contractors.  Montana taxpayers work too hard and shouldn't have to subsidize this kind of greed," Tester said.  "The wars we fight and shed blood for are not for profit. This legislation brings long overdue accountability and real change to the way American contractors do business in Iraq and Afghanistan."

According to the Government Accountability Office, the U.S. government allocated more than $300 billion on Iraq reconstruction between 2003 and 2006...more.
