ARL to Host Fourth Annual Leadership Institute
for MLS Graduate Students

In January 2008, in conjunction with the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia, PA, ARL will host its Fourth Annual Leadership Institute for MLS graduate students. The Leadership Institute objectives are:
  • provide a theoretical overview of macro-level issues facing research libraries;
  • provide advice on career opportunities in, and transitioning into a research library;
  • develop a community of learners amongst the participants; provide opportunities for both formal and informal mentoring; and
  • provide opportunities to network with ARL library leaders.
ARL Diversity Initiatives has designed a robust institute schedule to meet these objectives by involving a rich, diverse, and well-known faculty to deliver presentations. The faculty includes library leaders and alumni from the ARL Leadership and Career Development Program and the Initiative to Recruit a Diverse Workforce. Registration for the public events is open to any MLS student or librarian who is interested in transitioning into an ARL library, free of charge. The Leadership Institute has two tracks:
  1. The ARL Diversity Scholars track will provide a unique opportunity for ARL diversity scholars to develop a cohort-networking environment, discuss the program components, and to interact with their mentors.
  2. The Public track, for any MLS student or librarian who is interested in transitioning into an ARL library, will focus on macro-level issues facing research libraries and provide an opportunity to network with ARL library leaders.

The public track will include ARL Diversity Scholars and MLS graduate students to build a broader community by creating a networking opportunity for a greater number of MLS graduate students. The Diversity Scholars track starts on Thursday, January 10, 2008 and the public track begins on Saturday, January 12, 2008.  The institute concludes on Sunday, January 13, 2008.  The agendas for both tracks are below.

Register for the Institute

The Leadership Institute is a part of ARL's Initiative to Recruit a Diverse Workforce, funded by ARL member institutions and the Institute for Museum and Library Services, which includes leadership development training, a strong mentoring relationship with a professional librarian, career placement assistance, membership in professional associations (including the five ALA ethnic caucuses), and a stipend up to $10,000 (over two years).

The Initiative to Recruit a Diverse Workforce reflects the commitment of ARL members to create a diverse research library community that will better meet the new challenges of global competition and changing demographics.  For more information about the Initiative to Recruit a Diverse Workforce, visit http://www.arl.org/diversity/init/. To read testimonials from past participants who attended the 2007 Leadership Institute in Seattle, WA, read the inaugural issue of Synergy (April 2007).
