Valentines Day.  Nothing says soppy like getting sucked into another Hallmark Holiday. Kidding.  It really is good to sit and ponder love for a while.  Love makes the world go round.  I Y patternmaking and sewing.

It's easy to get the impression now days that you should be able to succeed at something the first time you try it.  Just look at all of the "one hour" patterns (which, of course, take one hour to decipher) or "sew in your sleep" projects.  Apparel sewing is difficult and it is really refreshing to have a student come through who respects the process of learning and doesn't let their lack of immediate and absolute proficiency squelch their desire to learn.

For this month of amour, we're looking at a few of the deeper and darker sides of fashion and sewing while introducing some more opportunities to step off the consumer wheel and design on your own.

Keep on sewin'!

Need a new venue for fashion fabrics?  The First Samples Fabric Bazaar plays matchmaker between local Austin designers who have fabrics to sell and seamsters on the prowl for apparel fabrics.  We have a large handful of designers participating in this first event and if it goes well, we will hold this event monthly and bring in more and more consignees-for-a-day.   First Samples Fabric Bazaar: Saturday, February 9th, 9-5

Project Refashion

Here is a dose of intellectualism to help balance out the slick fashion imagery you are imbued with day after day.  Check out Ms. Claire James fashion blog: Project Refashion.  She goes where Steven Moser and Marques Harper don't go.

Take a hint from Anna Sui and her nack for picking just the right print and length to make an oh so uptight dress a fun and flirty wardrobe staple.

Looking for some direction and validation with your sewing sojourn? You've asked for it, we're giving it to you.  Two paths to accomplished apparel sewing.

personal sloper

The Personal / Professional Sloper

The best tool you can have in sewing for yourself or creating a company sizing standard is a set of personal or professional slopers. Slopers are used by professional patternmakers, tailors and dress makers for creating custom garments.

We will make a full set of slopers: bodice front, back, skirt front, back and sleeve. Once the slopers are complete, you will learn how to use them as a tool for sewing and pattern selection and alteration. Use these slopers in the Patternmaking and Pattern Alteration workshop while learning the rules of ease and style.

Let Austin know that you are available for hire!   To get your name added to our new service provider webpage coming March 1st, fill out our form.  We should have a fairly nice list of seamsters, factories, patternmakers and other sewn product industry providers available for all to share by next months newsletter.  We've already got a good headstart...

Project Runway Pattern

#3501

Another fun Anna Sui / Project Runway pattern combo. Think summer. By the time you get your first sample sewn and then your actual garment completed, summer could very well be here.  Have fun with this one in muted colors and a bold print.

Did you know that the average cost of a dress now is about half of what it was in the 80's?  No wonder we find it difficult to save money when sewing at home. We love your stylish independence though.
