February 20-23 at 8pm, Culbreth Theatre

 

Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown's acclaimed revue features a collection of genre-hopping and soul-stirring tunes that invite a new generation to discover the power of musical theatre. Subjects and scenarios skip across the expanse of history, covering a full spectrum of human emotions against a rich backdrop. Songs for a New World

The stories and characters in Songs for a New World make us think about our own forks in the road and appeal to the explorer in us all.

Bruce Stevens is an accomplished organ recitalist in the U.S. and Europe and Founding Director of Historic Organ Study Tours.

The Westminster Organ Concert Series will continue its 2007-2008 season with a free public concert on Friday, February 22 at 8pm in the sanctuary of Westminster Presbyterian Church. The concert will feature organist Bruce Stevens and consist of works by Buxtehude, Bach, Mozart, Brahms and Rheinberger. Stevens frequently plays for the annual national conventions of the Organ Historical Society, and he has performed for regional conventions of the American Guild of Organists and most recently, for the national convention of the American Institute of Organbuilders. Active as a recording artist, he has recorded seven discs for Raven Recordings. 

 

The concert is FREE and open to the public, and there is ample parking behind the Church.

Jazz Percussionist Warren Smith in Concert

The University of Virginia's Arts Administration Program and the McIntire Department of Music present master percussionist Warren Smith in concert. A seminal jazz musician, Smith founded one of the first and longest-running education and performance lofts in New York City, Studio WIS. Downbeat Magazine has called him "... a sonic explorer whose combinations of percussive stimuli define a broad spectrum of textures, timbres and polyrhythmic overlays."

 

The first set of this FREE show at Satellite Ballroom will be a solo performance, followed by a jam-format second set. Tickets available at the door.

This ground-breaking children's museum exhibit examines Virginia Indian history from the Indian perspective, revealing vibrant and thriving cultures. Young people can enter the homeland of Virginia Indian peoples amid the sounds of birds, rustling leaves, and Native flute. Exhibition features include a longhouse with log benches, a re-created one-room school, and the work of contemporary Virginia Indian artists. Beyond Jamestown is a unique opportunity to experience the history and cultures of Virginia Indians.
