Paul's Witness
The two greatest leaders of the early Church, Peter and Paul, each have two days
of commemoration on the Church's Calendar of Saints. We remember Peter each year
on January 18 (for his confession of Jesus as the Messiah). We remember Paul
today (a week later on January 25 for his conversion from persecutor to evangelist).
Both Peter and Paul are also commemorated together on June 29 in observance of
the tradition of the Church that they both died as martyrs in Rome during the
persecution under Emperor Nero, in 64.
Paul, or Saul as he was known until he became a Christian, was a Roman citizen,
born at Tarsus, in present-day Turkey. He was raised as an orthodox Jew, studying
in Jerusalem for a time under Gamaliel, the most famous rabbi of the day. Describing
himself, he said, I am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the
tribe of Benjamin (Romans 11:1).
A few years after the death and resurrection of Jesus, Saul came in contact with
the new Christian movement, and became one of the most fanatical of those who
were determined to stamp out this dangerous heresy. Saul witnessed the stoning
of Stephen, the first deacon. He was on the way to Damascus to lead in further
persecution of the Christians when his dramatic conversion took place. (He was thrown
off his horse by the risen Jesus' blinding Light, and the Lord asked him, "Saul,
why are you persecuting me?") From that day, Paul devoted his life totally to
Christ, and especially to the conversion of Gentiles. The Acts of the Apostles
describes the courage and determination with which he planted Christian congregations
over a large area of the land bordering the eastern Mediterranean. Because of
Paul passion for the unchurched masses, Christianity spread across the non-jewish
world until it reached the hearts of you and me.
His letters, the earliest of Christian writings, reveal him as the greatest of
the interpreters of Christs mind, and as the founder of Christian theology. He
writes, I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ
who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son
of God, who loved me and gave himself for me (Galatians 2:20). Paul describes
himself as small and insignificant in appearance: His letters are weighty and
strong, it was said of him, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech of no account (2 Corinthians 10:10). He writes
of having a disability, one that he had prayed God to remove from him, and quotes
the Lords reply, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect
in weakness. Therefore, Paul went on to say, I will all the more gladly boast
of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me (2 Corinthians 12:9).
Paul, the well-educated and cosmopolitan Jew from outside of Israel, and Peter,
the uneducated fisherman from Galilee, had differences of opinion in the early
years of the Church concerning the mission to the Gentiles. More than once, Paul
speaks of rebuking Peter for his continued preference for Jewish Christianity;
yet their common commitment to Christ and the proclamation of the Gospel proved
stronger than their differences; and both eventually carried that mission to Rome,
where they were martyred. According to tradition, Paul was granted the right of
a Roman citizen to be beheaded by a sword, but Peter suffered the fate of his
Lord, crucifixion, though with head downward.

eBay at Beloved
eBay is a wonderful marketplace for the sale of unwanted items from around your home.
We have an opportunity to transform spring-cleaning by turning unused items into treasure for Church of the Beloved! I Sold It is an organization owned by Gina Dalma that places items on eBay for sale. She will research prices, photograph the item, list it, sell it, ship
it and worry about collecting the money for it. We will receive about 70% of the
sales generated. Gina will be available directly after church in the hospitality area on January 29th to discuss this eBay fundraiser and answer questions you may have. It's a great time to begin thinking
about items you may have around your home that you no longer need or use. Wedding
gifts you have never used? Clothing you haven't worn in a while? Jewelry? Duplicate
gifts you have received? The exact dates of this ministry-funding extravaganza
will be announced soon, most likely in February or March. During a two week period,
items can be taken to her store 1630 East Woodlawn Road, or if that isn't possible,
brought to church for us to take to the store for you. Remember the words of
Antoine de Saint-Exupery: A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a single man contemplates it,
bearing within him the image of a cathedral. Barb Johnston has volunteered to help any who need assistance sorting through their clutter
for saleable items. Our thanks to Ann Calandro and the Funding Team for this innovative opportunity!

Beat those Super Bowl Blues
Yes, the bad news is that the Carolina Panthers lost the NFC Championship. The
good news is that there is always next year, watching the 2007 Super Bowl on the
42 plasma HDTV you or your friend will win from Beloveds raffle (to be given
away this year when all 1000 tickets are sold). Because the donor is a national
vendor, we are able to sell a raffle ticket to anyone residing in the continental
United States. We are grateful to Fred Mellon who secured this generous donation and who is coordinating this effort on behalf
of the funding team. Its time to make the investment in selling the remaining $20 tickets. Remember that in 2006 we will not receive any outside financial assistance
for Fr. Dereks salary, so lets further the mission of Beloved with a beginning of the year cash infusion and make next years Super Bowl Sunday
a high-def one as someone watches the Panthers make it to the big game once again!
For tickets to sell or purchase, please see Fred at worship on Sundays or click here.
