Green & Grounds Update:

August in the Mid- Atlantic area is the heart of the dog days of summer. The staff at Green and Grounds is working hard at keeping the grass functioning through this difficult month. After a long summer the turf is beginning to show signs of stress particularly in heavy traffic areas. Soil compaction from foot traffic, cart traffic, and maintenance equipment causes an increase in bulk density (mass/unit volume) due to a decrease in soil porosity. Pore space is necessary to get oxygen to the roots, hold water for the turf, and aid in rooting. You may have noticed that the Green and Grounds staff has done some aeration in these traffic areas to relieve this compaction. In order to maintain the fairways at a high level we are going to restrict cart traffic in the fairways beginning on Monday August 11 and continuing until the end of August. This is a proactive measure taken to ensure the fairways have the best possible chance at surviving through the remainder of the month. The Green and Grounds committee would like to thank you for your cooperation in this matter. While carts will be limited to roughs only we would appreciate your efforts to scatter in the rough as best as possible to ensure the areas directly adjacent to the fairways do not become beat down to severely. Again thank you for your cooperation and as always feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, or comments at 410-252-8484 ext. 140 or at dhall@tgcc.net.

Sincerely,

Douglas Hall
